DENTAL QUESTIONS
So now you got me thinking of dental questions Laura (and our dental hygienists on board! )
What are your thoughts on:
teeth whiteners?
and also.
Flouride in vitamins for children? (in suffolk where our water does not have flouride in it).
I remember ( if Im getting this correctly) my pediatric dentist had said she prefers her own kids dont get too much flouride. so I Think she rotates from OTC vitamins and Rx vitamins (with flouride) so they dont get that much, in addition to the toothpaste too. and of course my pediatrician totally disagreed with her thoughts and said something like the flouride in the vitamin is for the teeth that have not come in yet (am I remembering this all wrong? I just know that he totally disagreed and said to take the Rx vitamins. I think the dosage is 25mg until they turn 3, then it doubles to 50mg right?
thanks for any tips and advice!

Fluoride has been a source of controversy for such a long time and each practitioner likes to handle things differently. My take on the situation- I took fluoride vitamins since there was none in the water and my teeth are fine. I actually think in non-fluoridated areas it is a good idea to have children take the Rx vitamins I believe it does help the developing teeth. The fluoride in toothpaste is minimal and you rinse your mouth out after you brush anyway so it is not sticking around too long- true fluoride tx you don't eat or drink 1/2 hour after tx. I believe in Rx vitamins and once a year in office tx with the gel for kids until about age 14 or so and if they are caries prone kids a treatment like using a fluoride rinse like ACT at home is helpful but when they are older. Little kids you don't want them to get too many products with fluoride because they swallow it and it is an Rx and can become toxic in high amounts! However the vitamins and yearly in office tx I do not believe are in excess but that is something to consider on your own and with the help of your Dr.s but it never hurts to get a few opinions and decide from there. As for whitening I am all for it for ADULTS! there are some draw backs like sensitivity that can be relieved with toothpastes... and if you have lots of restorations, crowns... they will not bleach like regular teeth. I have used whitening products and have had great personal success. The OTC ones work but take a long time and people love instant gratification and the other downside is they never truly get teeth as white as in office whitening but that can be costly so it depends upon what you are looking for. If you are considering in office treatment we will actually be running a special in my private practice (Massapequa Park) soon on the one day in office treatment ( I can let you know when we start!)
