Deviated septum surgery?

DH is soon having deviated septum surgery. The surgeon said it could be a week recovery time, but it's done as an outpatient.

Has anyone had this procedure and can tell me about the recovery? What can we expect in terms of pain/recovery time? I don't know if I should take off work to help him, or if he'll be able to take care of himself.

Re: Deviated septum surgery?

I had my septum corrected, my turbinates shrunk, maxillary sinuses opened and polyps removed back in 2003 at MEETH in NYC.

Honestly - it would probably be a good idea to say do it on like a Wednesday or Thursday when a long weekend is coming or you can take a day or two to help him and for him to take say a week (depends on how quickly you heal).

I was not allowed to drive for I think 24-48 hours - I had my packing removed at 8 am the day after my surgery. It is not a horrible surgery and I feel so much better that I am very glad I had it done.

Depends on the person as to the recovery. I was VERY uncomfortable with the packing in - but felt much better when it was out. I will say that (TMI) the mucus/blood and the antibiotics they give made me dizzy for about 3-4 days then I felt much better - I slept on the couch for 5 nights b.c I was told I had to sleep sitting up propped by pillow for 5-6 nights.

You don't need a lot of care but it helps to have someone around to get you drinks, food, and in case you get a bit off balance. -

Has he discussed what restrictions his dr will be giving him and what his recovery will most likely be like - if he hasn't he should definitely talk to him about those things.

Thanks so much for your response. Chat Icon There's a long process to get it approved by our insurance (proving it isn't cosmetic--it definitely isn't; he can't breathe), and then he meets with the surgeon again for the details and everything. Just trying to plan ahead and know what to expect. I'm more worried and nervous than he is! Chat Icon He's just looking forward to breathing regularly!
