DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
I could kill DH. He thinks the classes offered at the hospital are a waste of time and money. I don't know why he is trying to be cheap over $300.
DH thinks everything is common sense because he is a doctor. I really need to learn breathing techniques, pain management, how to change a diaper, etc.
I feel like I'm going to end up going to childcare classes by myself and it makes me so angry.
If I do go alone, I'll probably be the only one who doesn't have a spouse accompanying her.

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
You could get DVDs and watch them together at home.
I watched the laugh and learn BF DVD by myself and we watched the Happiest Baby on the Block together. I actually feel that the childbirth classes are a waste - how many people actually use those techniques when they are in labor? Anyone I have talked to say that everything goes out the window when you are in the middle of it!

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
Join the club! My DH refuses to even watch the infant care DVD with me.. and he snickered while I was watching the childbirth DVD...
Pick up the Laugh and Learn DVDs for both infant care, breastfeeding and childbirth from the library and you should be all set. No need to go to classes if money is tight.

You can rent things from the library. I have asked many a women about those classes and you know what? They all said it was a waste. Instint kicks in and you go with it.

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
We signed up for a class and went to the first one then dropped out. Our teacher sucked and THAT class would have been a waste of time. We got the DVD that others mentioned and it was much more informative so far.
We did take a breast feeding class this past weekend and it was great-- very informative and helpful.
I would say that unless your DH is a OB or a board certified lactation consultant, some education would be worthwhile. It's not all about breathing and positions-- which depending on who you ask doesn't mean much-- but what I found helpful is the preparation, what to look for in terms of signs, how to correctly time a contraction, etc. I didn't want to go into labor and then have both of us say, now what?
There is a lot more than just having a contraction, then going to the hospital-- unless you want to make several trips and they keep sending you home.
And if anything else, he should go for you. Just tell him how important it is to you.

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
I think it's normal. My DH went kicking and screaming to the CBE and Baby Basics classes, and complains now they were a waste of time/money. I think he's just in denial that this is happening.
For the Baby Basics class, there was one woman who showed up with her mom. She said her husband had to work at the last minute. I wonder though if he was being like your DH ;).

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
Not to change the subject, but I willl... I'm taking what seems to be the SAME course (lamaze, etc) and it's only going to cost us 125.00 (for both me and dh). I have info if you need it...
Dh needs to get over it... HE won't be pushing a 7lb baby out of his hooha, and he needs to support you when YOU do.
Men suuck sometimes!!!

I don't know about anyone else, but DH constantly will come up with some kind of symptom or ache when I complain about one. It's almost comical. It's like he thinks he is going to be doing all the hard work with this . He's also a lot more stressed about the big day then I am. Men/boys!!

Re: DH doesn't want to go to any hospital courses!
I have to be honest we took them and they were a waste. I wound up having 2 c-sections so I never used the breathing so I can't say of that would have helped me or not and the baby care class was silly. It was all common sense. JMO.

Took your advice and told him it was important to me. Kindness is better than anger! We compromised. He said he'd go to the childcare classes with me but he'd explain different anesthesia options to me personally and give me the hospital tour.
We're going to watch DVDs at home for breathing techniques, etc.
Did you ladies say you can rent these DVDs at the library? Do they have them at blockbuster too?

If you belong to Netflix or Blockbuster Online-- they have them. We have Blockbuster, but they didn't have the childbirth one-- just breastfeeding and newborn care.
I found the childbirth one at amazon.com for 12 bucks, so I just bought it. We have watched half of it, and I like the idea of going back and getting a refresher.
It's called Laugh & Learn Childbirth Preparation with Sheri Bayles.
Glad you were able to come up with a compromise. I am sure your DH will learn something from it!
