DH's crib - is it safe?

My MIL kept DH's crib and offered it to us. I have not seen it but she said it's in fine condition, it just needs to be refinished b/c its wood.

Do you think a crib from 1976 is okay to use or have the safety standards changed that much? Where would I find out this information? I think it would be really cool to use it if we can.

You should check the distance between the bars -- the rules on that have changed, but maybe they were narrow enough.

Re: DH's crib - is it safe?

Consumer Reports recommends not using cribs that were purchased prior to 2000 b/c the safety regulations apparently significantly changed around that time.

That being said, we all survived in our cribs built long before that. If you're at all uncomfortable though, I wouldn't use it. Maybe she has his old dresser or something and then you could get a new crib?

The also have mesh you can put over the bars to keep the baby from pushing through the slats.

I was just talking to DH about this. I understand the need for updated safety standards, but sometimes I think we get scared by too much. If the crib doesn't have any of the details that are now considered unsafe, I would consider using it. I am going to try to find a link for you.

Cribs and carseats are the two things that they say not to get second-hand.

Re: DH's crib - is it safe?

To be on the safe side I would buy a new crib...the regulations have changed alot since the 70's. Also, I would be concerned if the crib was painted because I don't think there were any lead paint regulations back then.

I totally agree. The hardware may be warn where you can't see it which can be very dangerous also.

I was thinking about the hardware too. Nails can rust, weaken. I just wouldn't take the chance.

If a beer can can fit through the slats, then it is no good. That is the test that Simmons suggested when I sold baby furniture.
