Diabetic arrested on subway for putting leg up to inject insulin!
I love the NYPD, but i'm like on this one. I take the trains every day, and with all the B S that goes on, they arrest someone for this?? Guy could've died!

Re: Diabetic arrested on subway for putting leg up to inject insulin!
I am really confused here. Putting your leg up on the subway is an arrestable offense? I'm confused as to why the MTA police even care if you have your leg up.
OK, found another article which clarifies it, http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/subway_insulin_shock_xX97aRrhJQ87gffBPlDmbJ they arrested him for disorderly conduct even though he complied with requests to get off of the train.
OK seriously? Is this all they have to worry about on the subways these days?
I don't agree with the NYPD taking anyone's insulin away, especially without consulting any type of medical professional. Sickening, IMO and I agree with Castillo, that is something that needs to change.

This is just plain absurd
With all the other nasty, disgusting things that go on in the subway, the cops go and arrest a man for this...please

I'm not an expert when it comes to diabetes or insulin injections, but I do believe that the injections need to be given at certain times of the day - on schedule.
So that may be the reason he gives himself the injection on his way to work, the schedule may coincide with his commute time - just a thought anyway.

I guess thats possible... if it is the case, i still find it slightly strange that it was timed where it would coinside with his commute to work...

Re: Diabetic arrested on subway for putting leg up to inject insulin!
Devil's advocate here:
Police see him with a needle on the train, they probably assume drugs, not insulin and thus don't believe his excuse when he says its insulin and not an illegal drug.
So, then they throw him in jail and he starts getting sick, etc. The police assume that he's getting sick from withdrawl, not due to lack of insulin.
They realize their mistake when the judge throws the case out.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong on either side, but obviously the plantiff has a point - policy needs to change within the NYPD, so no one dies needlessly.

If he said it was insulin, they took it away, he got sick - why wasn't a doc called ASAP?

As a diabetic who used to take shots (now have an insulin pump), there are certain times you have to take your shots. I was very selfconscious and would take them in a bathroom, but I have given myself a insulin shot at the beach or at the park - i was extremely discreet and even the people i was with had no idea what i was doing. Taking an insulin shot takes seconds. I don't know how long his commute was or why he was taking insullin on the subway - he could have had high blood sugar and needed to take insulin that second to lower it. The fact that they took his insulin away, which he needs to survive, and failed to get him medical care is horrible.

I see your point but other the other hand this is why so few have any respect for the NYPD, to them everyone is guilty till proven innocent

Yes I thought about the above scenarios too (thinking he was shooting drugs etc) but his needle says "humalog" on it! It didn't look like a regular syringe.
Perhaps people should just carry a rx for it with them, just in case??
I was actually told to carry a copy of my ekg (I have an irregular rhythm that is "normal" for me) because for whatever reason if an ekg is done on me somewhere the docs may think something really bad when it's the norm for me!

This would be plausible except that the second article states that his sister called NYPD and told them he needed his insulin and the guy arrested told him the same. They told the sister he wouldn't be there much longer and could wait. That's unacceptable. They also would have searched his belongings and found no illicit substances.
Most diabetics I know have a case which contains the syringe and vial of insulin or preloaded syringes (which someone pointed out are labeled) along with a glucose meter and test strips, and most wear a medic alert bracelet/necklace. Junkies don't carry meters and strips and wear alert jewelry. Any EMT could have run the guy's blood sugars but they failed to ever call one.
Drugs or not, they shouldn't have ignored his symptoms and should have gotten him prompt medical attention.
BTW, diabetics on a low can exhibit symptoms such as confusion, hostility and even appear drunk, but none of the articles I googled stated this was the case with Mr. Castillo. It appears he was thrown in jail for simply putting his foot on a seat on the train. If this was truly the case, then what a waste of resources. I am waiting for the rest of the story to come out though.. did he have a warrant or something against him?

Re: Diabetic arrested on subway for putting leg up to inject insulin!
If I'm reading this article correctly, he was not arrested for giving himself an injection. He was arrested for disorderly conduct for putting his foot on a seat. I have seen far worse cases of "disorderly conduct" than this on my three years commuting in manhattan. Think it was a slow day for the NYPD

yes i agree, if that's the only reason he was arrested its beyond imagination.

If his BS was low, insulin is the last thing you want to do. If he was low enough to cause noticeable issues, an insulin injection could actually kill him.
"To avoid a blood clot"..? Insulin is fat soluble, so it shouldn't be injected into the blood stream, so I'm not sure why there would be a blood clot issue...
Now he needs a new pancreas? One bout of extreme high blood sugar should not destroy your pancreas. Many people find out that they are diabetic because they go into a coma, or close to it because their BS is sooo high. It doesn't destroy the pancreas.
There's definitely more to the story.... as a 25 year diabetic, there are several things in the story that don't sit right with me.
I still think NYPD policy needs to change, though. It's very simple to find out if a person has medicine, or illicit drugs. Take the meds away at first, then do a quick check to determine the validity. Should be a couple of minute procedure....

I was just pointing out that the articles never mention him with a behavior issue that would make me think they had reason to arrest him though, such as when BS is low and a diabetic could appear drunk or hostile. Then maybe I could understand why he was brought in, KWIM?
I still think there is more, still think something isn't right.... but.. so far we've only heard one side of the story, hopefully over the next few days/weeks more info will leak out......

Re: Diabetic arrested on subway for putting leg up to inject insulin!
I agree that if they was any doubt whether it was insulin or illegal drugs, they should have erred on the side of caution.
However, reading the article, I feel like there is a big piece to the story missing.
