diaper question-cloth or disposable
hi.... mom-to-be here...
Modern cloth diapers with absorbant pads, and disposable liners look pretty good to me.... but do they work well?
for moms who used them (ex. Kushies), did you find them better or worse than disposable? did they leak? was diaper rash better or worse? was it a PITA to constantly wash them? Was it great being able to flush the poo covered liners vs having a diaper genie?
thanks so much for your input!

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
I think most moms on her use disposables. I wanted to use cloth but there is no diaper service on LI (or at least wasn't back in 2005) and DH was dead set against me washing them in our machine.
When I was looking into it I found the diapering board on Babycenter really helpful.

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
I tried cloth diapers with dd#2. I didn't like them. I found that she would leak constantly and was constantly getting terrible diaper rash. I tried Motherease and kissaluvs. I used them for about 1 1/2 months and then went to disposables. I found a lot of great info on diaperpins.com. Hope this helped.

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
We use cloth and sposies (he wears those at daycare 2 days a week). I found pocket diapers to be great (we use Fuzzi Bunz and Bumgenius).
We started when he was about 4 months old. I never had problems with leaks until he was about 10 months old. Now, he'll soak through them in 2 hours. I just need to get some doublers, but I haven't since I have to order them off the intranet. (Keep in mind I'm still using the same diapers on him -- he's 15 months -- that he had on when he was 4 months.) So I change him frequently when I'm at home or I put sposies on him when we're going out.
Cloth diapering is really so much easier than people think. I just couldn't take throwing out huge plastic bags of dirty diapers every couple of days -- it seemed so wasteful and bad for the environment.
I actually think we get less diaper rash with cloth and they feel so much nicer on his little tush.
I wash once a day, not really that big of a deal.
Yes, we cloth diaperers are rare on this board, but there is at least one other mom who uses Fuzzi Bunz on here.

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
thanks everyone!
We've got a while to go before our 'crumb' arrives (due date is 9/28), but I like to plan ahead for major stuff like this.....
I will definitely look into fuzzi bunz. I'll probably buy a test pile and see how we like it.....

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
My sister uses cloth and I think the amount of energy she uses to wash in hot water and dry them negates most of the savings (which was her main purpose for doing it). Especially since she has to wash them separately. I'm not sure about leaks, etc.

Alot of people have this misconception. But, especially with today's efficient washers, this is not the case -- especially if you hang them to dry (which I do).
It's much worse to put a bunch of untreated human waste in a landfill. Also, the negative effects of manufacturing, transporting and bleaching all those diapers is tremendous, not to mention the hundreds of years it takes for them to decompose in their little landfill grave.
As for $$ -- good cloth diapers are expensive, but you can use them for a long time. DS is 15 months and is using the same ones he was in at 4 months and you can reuse them with the next baby!

Re: diaper question-cloth or disposable
We use prefolds, fuzzybuns, and bum genius at night. My husband swears that there's far less diaper rash than when his son was little (he had 'sposies).
Once you get in the groove, washing becomes pretty routine.
I'd be happy to give you more info - I just did this for a friend researching cloth - just FM me.
