Did anyone else hear about Immigration picking up about 300 ppl yesterday?
As most of you know, I am an adult ESL teacher. Well, this morning I went into class and more than half of the class was missing. When I asked wher everyone was, a few students told me that Immigration paid some visits to a bunch of factories in the area (we are in Brentwood) and were even picking people up off the street. Supposedly News12 and one of the Spanish stations mentioned it last night.
I feel so bad for my students. They have been assured that they are safe in school (it seems that learning is okay, but working is not) but I must admit that I am nervous too. My job depends on these people. If I lose my students, I lose my job.
Also has anyone else heard about what is going to happen May 1st. Supposedly it is International Labor Day and my Hispanic students told me that they will be boycotting schools, work, and stores to show what this country would be like without them. Once again, I am worried for MY job since I teach them.
Any thoughts?

I heard about May 1, but unfortunately one day won't make a difference.
You should watch a day without mexicans, it was pretty good.

I have to agree that this movie was bad...but it took the funny side of the immigration issue. Not an Oscar winner, but gets the point across.

I know about May 1, but I was unaware of any actions last night. DH's restaurant will be out of commission without Mexicans.

I looked on News12 and didn't see it either. I wonder if they only had a clip and they don't have it online.
My students all seemed freaked out today. Even the ones with papers were just shook up. They said it was scary.

I think the May 1st strike will be very interesting to see. It saddens me because so many people choose to be in denial about the magnitude and the role illegal immigrants play in the economy. If the May ist strike does take place this country will lose BILLIONS of dollars in business.

I don't think this will have any more effect on the economy than those emails that suggest that everyone avoids buying gas on wednesdays. it's one day, I don't think it's enough to show the ramifications.

Re: Did anyone else hear about Immigration picking up about 300 ppl yesterday?
There's a Spanish restaurant around the corner from our apartment that has a sign about being closed on May 1 in honor of its Latino workers. DH and I couldn't figure out the significance of May 1st. I wonder if the restaurant is closing to honor them or if it's afraid of workers not showing up.

I don't agree. Ppl will continue to buy gas no matter what the $$ 'cause we're a lazy country and have convinced ourselves we need to get from point A to B with our big SUV's. I'm not making fun of anyone,I'm also guilty.
But,can you imagine if all the immigrants wouldn't come to work on May 1st??? I think we fail to really feel the impact of this, this streches way beyond just bus boys in restaurants.
I personally support them and May 1st.

Sorry but I'm happy to hear that they are doing something about illegal immigrants. I just wish it was more along the lines of making them legal and making them pay taxes.

Are we talking about illegal aliens or legally documented immigrants in addition? I really don't see how one day will do anything, I mean, everyone will be at work on may 2, making up for whatever the missed on may 1st. not to mention that for the most part the immigrant population is concentrated in a few main areas, not all throughout the united states. I know it's not a possibility, but a week would demonstrate the impact more, you know what I mean?

From what my students say, a lot of Hispanic Americans are doing it, too. Not just illegals.

Oh in no way do I think that they should not pay taxes and become legal..you are 100% right. But I think that the US was turning a blind eye until now because the illegal good outweighed the bad.
