Re: Did anyone else hear about Immigration picking up about 300 ppl yesterday?
Are we talking about illegal aliens or legally documented immigrants in addition? I really don't see how one day will do anything, I mean, everyone will be at work on may 2, making up for whatever the missed on may 1st. not to mention that for the most part the immigrant population is concentrated in a few main areas, not all throughout the united states. I know it's not a possibility, but a week would demonstrate the impact more, you know what I mean?
It's supossed to be illegal immigrants. As far as I know.

Sorry but I'm happy to hear that they are doing something about illegal immigrants. I just wish it was more along the lines of making them legal and making them pay taxes.
I agree the issue has gotten out of control. Many people want to pay taxes & be here legally, but they can't and that is the whole problem. What is the right method? How do you pick & choose & open the gates to everyone?

Maybe when I think of immigrant, I don't just think Mexican. In my neighborhood there is a huge population of illegal Koreans,Chineese,Eastern Europeans,Irish, etc. I clump all of these together and wonder about the impact

If they were all made legal, they wouldn't be paying taxes because most of their jobs are "off the books". I'd be surprised if employers agreed to pay them on the books, payroll taxes, unemployment, disability, etc. At the very least, they'd be given a choice.

This goes back directly to the debate we had here a few weeks ago, who's really at fault: The illegal Immigrant - OR- the illegal employer.

I agree. The employers would not want to pay more or pay taxes.

exactly- if they really wanted to do something about it, they'd go after employers- fining them BIG bucks every time they're caught.
It's not fair that these employers go around hiring people at below living wages.
I wouldn't be surprised if most conservatives want to keep the illegals illegal- a great supply of cheap labor for their big businesses.

So true!!! That's really a big misconception that they dont pay taxes. An acquaintance I know is here illegally and yet he holds a legitmate "on the books" job. When I asked him about taxes and stuff he said he has an id number and that his paycheck was like everyone else's. But I guess since the public is used to seeing the workers on the street, they assume all illegal immigrants dont pay taxes.

Oh, another small point I wanted to make was people would be suprised how many US citizens hold jobs that are off the books also. They dont pay taxes either.

Good point! Its called CASH MONEY.
Please, I know someone who's living the high life in a mansion in Cold Springs Harbor thanks to his huge construction co. run by illegal immigrants (latino's and other nationalities) Of course he has a few legit ppl operating it so it looks "good". So you tell me when he files his corporate taxes, the government doesn't question how he can sucsessfully run a multi-million dollar corp with just 4 workers??? Yeah, sure

I agree. Yes, our economy would be NOTHING without them, because americans will not do what they do.
But the ILLEGAL ones need to be lega to live here. They should apply for citizenship uif they want to live and work here and pay taxes just like the rest of AMERICANS

I agree- in the long run, they hurt themselves by working off the books- no social security (though that's probably not going to be around anyway), etc.
I wonder what happens to a lot of these day laborers who are hurt on the job. They have absolutely no recourse, do they? And I am sure it happens.

This is another big misconception. Because they are here illegally there is NO chance they can become naturalized. Only those that came here legally are allowed to apply for citizenship. But in those cases they have legitmate jobs and pay taxes anyway. The illegal immigrants would have to go back to their home country and apply to enter the US. Getting approved to enter the united states is like winning the lottery. Thats why most of them come here illegally in the first place.

I was told by our friend who runs a contracting business that they are either paid off or "police themselve". In other words, if you turn in the contractor, there will be no work for the others.
I still wonder what happened to that kid that fell off of the roof in Huntington.

Courts allow illegal aliens to receive workers' compensation benefits. Their immigration status doesn't affect their ability to collect $ from being injured on the job.

FYI - they are entitled to collect Workmans Compensation from their employer regardless of their immigration status

oh yes they do, many times my company has unwittingly hired PHONY SS card, Dept of Labor license and DEP Lic. card carrying individuals (yes they actually were able to get docs from DOL)
some got hurt accidently, some were totally staged... either way they sue and are are entitled to Workers Comp and possibly damages. Even the guy who used his cousins SS#, and was caught by a PI working on Disability received a settlement from our insurance company. This type of thing needs to stop.

Lots of times they are not using numbers issued to them.
When I get a W-4 completed with 10 Exemptions, I start to wonder.... then it is always confirmed at the end of the year when Social Security sends us a letter telling us that the social security # does not match the name in their system or doesn't exist at all. By putting 10 (or some other ridiculous #) they get the maximum money in their checks and don't file taxes 4/15. Not to mention the # of W2's that are returned to us, because of wrong addresses.
Thing is, SS doesn't even want know the story, they just want the correct SS# - if you don't have it - oh well case closed they don't want to hear back from you.
