Did anyone else hear about the proposed merger of Suffolk and Nassau counties?

yes, i read about this in newsday today. I can see their argument, but I doubt it will ever happen. Can you imagine if they had to merge everything like the police dept's, etc...? i don't think unions, etc would allow that to happen w/ the different layoffs that would result.

Won't ever happen. I haven't thought through the cost savings, etc so I'm not sure how bad the idea is

I do like the idea of Peconic County out on the east end...
That's a good idea. Suffolk is HUGE and the east end and western Suffolk are completely different, have different needs, etc.

Peconic/Riverhead County has been talked about for years. Surprised it never happened

There has been a proposal in the nys assembly to split ny into ny and west ny. Ny would be dutchess county and south

Neither is ever going to happen. LI is too pompous to combine the counties and we're worth too much to NY to lose us (We pay the majority of NY taxes!!)

This is what I was thinking too, they say it will save $$ next thing you know they will spend millions on new police cars because they say the wrong thing

I don't see it ever happening either.
I do think it makes sense to make "Out East" a seperate county.
When I have to go out there for referrals for my job, it's SO FAR since I live in Western Suffolk, on the border of Nassau.
We've been talking about this at work for awhile, about hiring staff to just cover that area.

I don't see much point really. I DO think all the tiny villages are unecessary (I live in a town with 5 of them), but one big county? Too huge, covers too much territory.
