Did anyone have a OVERACTIVE Thyroid after giving birth

I had a physical yesterday and was told that I have extremely high #'s for my thyroid blood work.
My MD said I have an overactive thyroid yet I have non of the side effects. He took more blood just to confirm the first set of numbers were accurate. I will know more on Monday.
I need to go see an endocronologist (sp?)
Has this happened to anyone else? What was the outcome?

I did - they found it when I went for my annual physical - my levels were less than 0.001% - I had no idea (I thought I was having issues from hormones - I had palpitations etc). They found it in Oct/Nov. I see an endocronologist now every 3-4 weeks who checks my blood work - as I understand it when you get postpartum thyroiditis you start out with hyperthyroid then go to normal then many people drop to hypothyroid and some stay there and others return to normal thyroid function. I was told that in most moms it will return if you have another child. Most people don't know they have it unless they get a physical (at least that is what my endo and PCP dr's said b.c people think it is just their hormones when they get symptoms.)

I normally have an underactive thyroid but after my daughter my thyroid became over active temporarily. It did return to underactive again once everything in my body settled down.

I'm not really sure. I just tested positive for underactive thyroid, and we aren't sure if this is my Hashimoto disease kicking in or PPT. I'm on synthroid and have an appt. to see an endocrinologist which may shed some light on it.

My doctor said it sounds a little like PPT--I was miserable and moody right after giving birth, then I felt much better, had loads of energy for a little while. Then I crashed and felt exhausted and depressed again.

Basically, I don't really know. If the endocrinologist can tell, I'll let you know.

Some people don't have symptoms - honestly they didn't really bother me until after I was diagnosed - I was only hot and had occasional palpitations I just assumed were related to hormones (since I BF). I never complained about any of them - I only found out when my PCP called me and said my bloodwork was off and to see and Endo- my Dr said many people don't know they have it until they go for a physical and it shows up in their blood work.

depends if you have overactive or underactive thyroid issues

Overactive:
Excessive sweating
Heat intolerance
Increased bowel movements
Tremor (usually fine shaking)
Nervousness; agitation
Rapid heart rate
Weight loss
Fatigue
Decreased concentration
Irregular and scant menstrual flow

I became hot, tremors, agitation, palpitations.

Underactive (I was told sometimes women get PPD with this stage):

Fatigue
Depression
Modest weight gain
Cold intolerance
Excessive sleepiness
Dry, coarse hair
Constipation
Dry skin
Muscle cramps
Increased cholesterol levels
Decreased concentration
Vague aches and pains
Swelling of the legs

Thanks for posting the symptoms Lillykat. I didn't realize aches and pains were a sympton of underactive thyroid too. That explains my joint aches. Ha! Must show to DH--he thought it was due to the extra weight I'm carrying since giving birth. Lovely of him to offer his opinion, isn't it?Chat Icon

Were your numbers high or low? High TSH indicates underactive thyroid. Like if it's above 5 I think. Low TSH numbers indicate an overactive. It's reversed. I have an underactive thyroid and my first TSH reading 3 years ago was 150 Chat Icon I was extremely tired, losing hair, the skin around my eyes started changing colors and I put on like 8 pounds in a month.
I'm on synthroid now and I'm fine. But I have heard of this happening after pregnancy.

I dont remember the #'s. The report is in my car, after the rain stops I will get it. But I know he said it is over-active, not under.

If you have PP thyroiditis then you would be in the hyperactive stage right now.
