Did anyone have there home tested for lead paint?

Our bid was just accepted and I was wondering how many of you had homes tested for lead paint.

Our realtor actually advised us against testing for lead paint because we were painting over everything anyway. apparently the lead paint inspection must be filed somewhere and if you go to sell your house you have to give it to the new buyers or the new buyers can get it or something like that..... As long as your house was built after a certain year you have nothing to worry about.

I do not agree with this. I looked it up, and lead paint was used into the late 70's. your inspector should be able to check for lead paint.

Here, in PA, most homeowners don't test, because if your home was built before 1970, which most are, you're pretty much guaranteed there is lead paint in the home. But, as long as you paint over it and there aren't substantial chips, it should be ok.

Yes - this is what our realtor told us as well - that since our house was built in 1938 we would probably find some lead paint. But she said in order to remedy the problem just to paint over everything, which we were planning on doing anyway.

Re: Did anyone have there home tested for lead paint?

Our home was from the 1930s, and we knew the paint probably had lead...we had it tested, and yes, it was lead paint....we gutted the house anyway, so it's all gone.

The owners disclosed that the paint was lead...but we had an engineer come anyway to test a ton of other things and check out the structure, etc.

Apparently the only time lead paint is bad is when it starts to chip off and young children eat the paint chips. From what i understand it has a sweet taste. So painting over it prevents it from chipping off, thereby solving the problem.

Re: Did anyone have there home tested for lead paint?

The house was built before they stopped lead paint, it has been painted over, but i think i saw a spot chipping in the bathroom. I got nervous, but we will just paint over the wall. Thanks for the help

steph you have to test for lead paint if the house was built before 1975 thats what they suggest. if yours was id suggest you do it cause you will be eventually having kids (my nieces or nephews) lol.

Lead paint doesn't pose a problem unless it is ingested. This is usually only problematic in cases where the paint is in serious decay, thus chipping and/or paint dust. So, yes, if you plan on painting the house, the danger is usually eliminated. BUT, you should always make sure that you remove the chipped paint and sand the walls BEFORE you paint because otherwise, the chipping will eventually rear it's ugly head again. ANd, obviously, if you sand, wear a mask and remove the dust.

just to be safe, I would want the lead paint completely removed.

Re: Did anyone have there home tested for lead paint?

I remember having to sign a release or some kinda of form from the real estate agent right after the offer was put in regarding lead paint. I dont remember what the form was about but I do remember one agent making a big deal saying that they wouldnt even present the offer without this being signed.
I have to look for it but someone on here should remember
