Re: Did anyone hear about the shark washing up on the Rockaway beaches?

the shark was dead, it seemed it washed out like that because fishermen were probably trying to get it.

Re: Did anyone hear about the shark washing up on the Rockaway beaches?

It happened at Beach 140th Street in Rockaway

From wnbc.com
The shark came ashore near 140th St. and the shoreline in Rockaway Beach.

A Parks Enforcement Patrol officer discovered the male shark on the sand during a routine survey of a closed part of the beach, parks department spokesman Ashe Reardon said. The shark, which was dead when it was found, is between five and six feet long.

New York Aquarium shark researcher Hans Walters said it was a blue shark, a species usually found in deep waters of the open ocean. He said he thought it had been dead for a while.

The beach was closed when the shark washed ashore at 2:15 p.m.

How is how the shark died is unclear, though one eyewitness said it had a hook in its mouth.

NewsChannel 4 was told there was a shark tournament in the area a couple of weeks ago, though it is unclear if this incident is related to the tournament in any way.

Local fishermen speculated that possibly the shark was injured and then later died and washed ashore here.

The shark was removed later in the afternoon and was being looked at by officials from the New York Aquarium, who are trying to determine what type of shark it was.

A local fisherman, whose wife took a picture of the shark, said it appeared to be a Thrasher Shark, a deep-water shark, not usually found in this area.

It regurgitated the contents of its stomach from dying. I heard that a fisherman didn't remove the hook, just cut the line so it suffered!Chat Icon
