I watched the broadcast on BBC america.

it was a very interesting speech. I have mixed feeling about the whole thing.

I do feel that his words may have undermined our position in the peace process from the Palestinian perspective.

While I didn't hear what he said, I did read some articles that quoted him. As a daughter and wife of Israelis, I am definitely biased. While I dream of peace in Israel, i'm afraid until the Palestinians are willing to accept the state of Israel's right to exist, there can be no peace. I have to leave work in a little while, but I can later. I just did Google News- "Bush and Israel" and sorted by date.

I don't think there will be peace until there is acceptance on BOTH sides of the fence.

60 years while wonderful for Israel, is still a HELL of a long time for people to live like refugees...esepecially when they too have occupied the land for thousands of years.

so many of the sentiments about finally having a state and such could EASILY be extended to the Palestinians as well.

While the violence against Israel is reprehensible, I think that the Israeli govt also needs to take a look at itself.

they are building settlements in East Jerusalem, which is ILLEGAL.

I think that more compromise could be done on BOTH sides...and I feel that b/c Bush is so clearly and unabashedly in on Israel's "side" there will never be enough trust from the Palestinian perspective to make much of a difference.

I never feel bad for the govts...I feel bad for the people on both sides. right now it is VERY easy for the terrorist to breed HATE into their children.

there will not be peace until there is hope.

I missed it but heard 2nd hand that he invoked hitler by implying that Obama is like the minority in congress in the 1930's who hoped to seek a diplomatic solution with the nazis rather than stopping them....

if that indeed is true, that is a pretty low blow, and totally uncalled for partisanship... especially considering it was a foreign event he was attending.

just looked it up... yep it's true... he did say those things, and the white house confirmed it was a jab at the dems... now the dems are fighting back Chat Icon

seriously, why is our gov't SO partisan that it can't even behave overseas for a couple hours? it was never this bad in the 70's and 80's.... at one time, we were americans FIRST....

Well, this administration has had one foreign policy disaster after another, so this is hardly surprising. Sounds like Bush.

all of the middle east was watching this speech though. it is such a critical moment....

I only hope that they realize with a new administration comes new beliefs and ideas. We need people to believe we have the best interest of the WORLD in our hearts, not just Israels.

I have NOTHING against israel...but in this game...we cannot pick favorites...there can be no Cane vs. Abel.

today GW sounded every ounce a self righteous religious zealot as the worst of them out there.

and while some of the things he said rang true, for the most part I feel more harm than good was done.

if you get a chance, check out the foreign coverage. I find it has the most interesting perspective (BBC World news is good)

I just want to start out by agreeing with Shelly - I too am the daughter of an Israeli and have lived there myself for 10 yrs

2nd, I would like to address Ophelia’s statement about the refugees. the Palestinians and all Arab nations collectively refused an offer in 1947 which gave the Palestinians their own state. They weren't interested in their own state as long as it was alongside Israel and the Jews.

Israel moved out all the Israeli settlers from Gaza a few years ago and instead of peace, they have been shelled on an almost daily basis from the terrorist Hamas group who is now the Palestinian Gov't - which included a violent transition with Fatah.

keep in mind – the Palestinians chose a terrorist organization to lead them.

the Hamas charter is to destroy the Israeli state.

how do you make peace with someone who has vowed to destroy you?

here's an email from a friend of my parents who lives in Ashkelon

"Just now there is a terrorist attack on a mall in Ashkelon, much damage is done to the 3rd floor where there is a clinic: the doctor, her nurse and her patient were wounded and other people and small kids were wounded too. All the time the rockets fall and no wonder people get killed and wounded suffer from shock. The government evicted Jewish familes from Gush Katif so that there should be quiet and now it is more dangerous for the other settlements to live with terror. This last terror was when President Bush and his entourage are here and also many important people from all over the world are here taking part at the Presidents' convention. - I read the article in Washington Post which says that Israel has the right to exist. The Arabs didn't agree to the devision in 1947 made war and lost. -
I enjoyed the welcome of your President and his wife at the airport with the red carpet and the military concert etc. It was very festive. All were in a good mood. On TV they are still speaking about the terrorist attack with many wounded and much damage to the building.
Let us wait for better news! "
