I thought this was just a finger prick but I believe the standard is to actually have blood drawn.

I don't know how I feel about having an acutal blood draw on DS, he's healthy, eats clean and is still breast fed. I'm thinking of not doing it. Wondering if anyone else is in my camp.

Nope, we did it at 14 months. I thought there was a law that required it (for the lead test) depending on where you live? I am not 100% sure but you may want to check.

Thanks. Was it a prick or did they draw a vial of blood? I'm fine with a prick but when I called to make an appointment was told otherwise.

We did it at 15 months. DD was still breastfed and ate very healthy, and it came back that she needed more iron. I know how you feel, and I was literally in tears when they did it, but just know you are doing what's best for your child. Hopefully it comes back perfect, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

It was not A vial - it was vialS. I literally cried my eyes out (that might have partially been due to being pregnant - hormones!), but we both survived and you and DS will too.

It was an actual draw (I originally thought it was a finger prick). She handled it like a champ - she was just so curious about what was going on, I was impressed. You may get emotional but you'll be fine. I delayed it and then one day woke up and said you know what, GOD FORBID there is something off that could be detected in bloodwork, i'd never forgive myself if it was something that could have been picked up sooner had I done the test. I'm not trying to scare you, just sharing what helped me make my decision. Chat Icon

I did it for DS at 12 months. It was 2 vials and IMO not a big deal. You have to go to a lab that is great with young kids/babies. My Ped even recommended 2 labs. One was the lab he brings his 2 boys to.

They were great and DS screamed for the sec the needle was going in but then was fine while they tood the blood and by the time we left you would never have know he even cried.

It really isn't a big deal. And it is required by law, I believe, a Bearcat mentioned. Of course it's hard to watch, but it's all over in a matter if minutes and they forget it even happened.

I didn't.
I couldn't reconcile them sticking a needle in my baby's arm.
If she was sick or something, of course.
But to me it was a routine test.
I skipped it.
The Dr asked about it next visit- I said I declined it.
He never asked again.
I just couldn't do it.

They haven't arrested me yet...
I don't think it's a law.
But maybe i better go underground- just in case... Chat Icon

This is exactly how I feel, it's fairly invasive for a perfectly healthy child. I'll double check but I don't think it's required by law just a routine thing.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?

just went through this. We went to the lab, and they stuck DS TWICE fishing around for a vein and couldn't find one. We didn't even get any blood drawn. It was torture and heart wrenching for me, he was hysterical and i practically left in tears. I don't know if i'm going to get it done, DH is against it now. If i do I'll be going to a different place. Chat Icon

If it's required by law, I'm a criminal.
I skipped it and the 2 year old one too.
It's my child. It should be my decision.
And i feel like it's just another unneccessary test.
She is on iron already - so I'm not too worried about anemia.
I know I shoudl do it for the lead but I just can't seem to go there.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?

It says it's required by New York State but does not say "law" - not sure if that's conclusive one way or the other. Also seems to suggest that a fingertip prick is sufficient for the lead test.

Thank you Bearcat! I think my happy medium will be to request a prick ONLY for lead...that's really the only thing I'm worried about.

I couldn't do it for her 12 month. They wanted me to strap her down to do this. It was breaking my heart. For her 2 yr. check up, they just pricked her finger so it wasn't that bad. I def agree about the 12 month though.

Went to the LIJ lab in Bethpage right next to Singletons. They were amazing. I had DH come with me and he held DS and I rubbed his foot. He was a tropper and I think it bothered me more than it did him.
