Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We did it at 18 months. I was so worried and felt so bad for DD but it turned out to be ok. We just got a script for the 2 year and I'm dreading it again.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We never did it bc we didn't receive a script to do it from the ped. At 2 and 3 yrs old (2 kids) the ped asked why we didn't do the bloodwork at 1 yr. So we did it at that time. Even then it was hard emotionally for me to hold down the kids to do it.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
I don't understand why it's such a big deal. We always do the tests they do. It's doesn't take that long, it's not like the kids remember it and I really wouldn't describe a blood draw (which was a finger prick at our office) as "invasive".
To me it's just like any doctor or dentist appt, it's just something that they need to do. They don't have a good enough memory to be traumatized.

My boys both 3&2 have never had it done. We tried with my oldest but it was not happening. My ped never asked again.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We did it around 18 months but only b/c his old pediatrician never even told us about it. He was more in awe of what was going on and didn't even flinch/cry. We just did his 4 year bloodwork and he cried but the minute the needle came out he was fine. Both times they got him on the first stick but they were only getting one chance to get it right!

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We did it when the dr recommended it, and they do the blood draw in their office. DS wasn't happy with it, but it was something that was over really quickly and he was fine within seconds. i didn't think there was any reason NOT to do it..

I can't believe they drew vials of blood from some children. My ped did a finger prick in office they checked lead and iron and that was it
If it was vials I prob would have tried to refuse it

And this is why I refused it. I had never heard of such a thing at such a young age. If they want her blood they can take it from a finger prick. How on earth woudl they even find a vein in such a chubby baby arm? The thought makes me feel sick. And yes, I find that VERY invasive! Vials. What the HECK are you testing for?

It's "such a big deal" because I had to hold my baby girl down while they tried to find a vein THREE times, while she was SCREAMING and looking at me begging for it to stop. By the end I could barely hold back tears.
And it wasn't a finger prick. It was two vials of blood drawn.
She won't remember. I will.

They dont do it where I live(in NC.) My son had bloodwork for the first time when he had a kidney issue at 3.

OMG there is no way I could have handled that. Maybe I am weak. But I would have taken her right the EFF out of there and probably wanted to punch that useless tech in the throat. I am like an nutcase when it comes to my DD hurting. That made me sick. And reaffirmed why I can't do it. So I'll take the chance. Our house was not built when lead paint was used. I think I can take the risk

OMG my DH was about to knock the technician out. They just kept poking and poking. We bolted out of there.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
This might highlight the importance of going to a lab that is recommended for infants/toddlers. I did NOT have to hold DD down. She sat on DH's lap, the tech instructed me to sit on the opposite side that she was drawing blood from and talk to her/distract her. DH had to hold her steady but I definitely wouldn't describe it as holding her down. I'm sure this doesn't work for every child, of course, but I would imagine that the attitude and experience (and patience) of the tech can have an effect on the child's perception of what's going on.
If it helps anyone - we went to NSLIJ lab at the medical building at 877 Stewart Ave in E. Garden City.

I agree that it should be done by a good lab.
In my story about holding DD down, it was being done by an experienced phlebotomist at Stony Brook hospital while I was there for a visit with her pediatric oncologist. Trust me, they know what they are doing. She has to get blood drawn every two months and it's usually never an issue, but that one time it was. After 15 minutes of being poked no kid is going to sit still.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, because most times it's going to go very smoothly with little or no tears. I just hate reading posts asking "what's the big deal, it's not even invasive". (And I know you didn't say that)

I went to the same lab someone else mentioned on here and had an opposite and horrible experience. I also called earlier in the day to say i was bringing in my 1 y/o and would there be someone capable there - I was told yes.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
we had to do it at 12 & 24 months- ds cried for a second but it wasnt bad. Only reason that I did it was that we live in an older coop in queens and I was really worried about lead

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
When we did the 1 year blood test, it was in the office and a finger prick, but that was pretty bad b/c they had to get more then a tiny bit. They had little "tubes" that they had to fill up. It felt like it took forever b/c the blood wasn't coming out as quick as they would have liked so the girl was squeezing his finger while DH held DS and I tried to entertain him while not crying.
I felt it was important, so we did it. I was initially happy they didn't use a needle, but when we did some allergy testing when he was about 2-2 1/2 (also in office but a needle draw) that actually went smoother - though he cried. Not sure if at 1 it would have been harder to get a good vein.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
Just took my DS today to Quest. He will be 1 year old this coming weekend. He is my 3rd child, so I knew what to expect.
The pediatrician requested he get blood drawn for a lead level and a hemoglobin count. It was an actual blood draw. They took two small vials of blood. He sat on my lap and the lady that did the blood had another helper hold the baby's arm and she did the prick. He whined, but never really cried. It was over in about 30 seconds. It seems longer when you are watching them do it while they sit on your lap, but I can assure you, if it's done correctly and right, it's over before you know it.
I think I stressed way more than the actual procedure warranted. I made an appt, so we were in and out in less than 10 minutes (I used Quest Labs in Syosset). Just be sure the lab you go to is able to do pediatric blood draws. They use a smaller needle and have people capable of drawing blood from small children.
ETA: My DD had a finger prick when she was 1 and I was told the results were inconclusive because they did not get enough blood and gave me a Rx to go and get it done again. I never did.
They will not be able to start Kindergarten in NYS without a base line lead level test. My DD had to go and get her blood drawn for it at age 4.5 because I didn't go back and do it at age 1 when they requested the re-test. IMO, it was far more stressful having it done on a 4.5 year old who knows what is going on than when you take a 1 year old.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
My twins were almost 18 months by the time I did it. I brought my mom with me for support. It honestly wasn't that terrible. Sure they cried but they were fine soon after. I went to Lab Corp in Lake Success and they were extremely nice.

As a PP said, they will not get into K without a NYS lead test.
IMO, better to tackle it now while their memories are short, then when they are 4-5 and will remember.
Both of my kids were tested at Good Sam (DS repeatedly) and I have never, ever had an issue.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
DS' blood test at 12 months was done at the peds office and it was just a finger prick. He's 3 and has never had blood drawn from his arm and he's has all necessary blood tests.
ETA: I know they tested for lead so a finger stick is enough for a lead test.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
Based on MY experience alone with my sons, I was going to write that it really isn't a big deal...but I understand from reading other posts that some children had a harder time with it.
They use teeny tiny needles on children and if you have a good phlebotomist working with them, it shouldn't be bad at all..with both my boys, it was quick and my first didn't even shed a tear. My second son cried but he cried at everything, lol.
I've also had to bring my oldest in for blood tests routinely since he's little for his peanut allergy testing and each time has been a piece of cake.
I know in theory a blood draw is invasive, but if you think about it, it's a little needle going into a superficial surface vein..its not anything really out of the ordinary and hurts parents more than the kids (in MOST circumstances). I have not been through a child screaming though or not being able to find a vein on the first try...my experiences have been great, so it's easy to say its not the biggest deal. I feel for anyone who went through a hard time with it with their child :(
Also-one last thing to remember....people get scared by several vials of blood as opposed to one vial, but the amount is SMALL that is taken and it isn't painful to give 2 or 3 vials as opposed to 1. Once the needle is properly in place, it should not hurt the child. Most kids unfortunately react at an initial feeling of pain/discomfort and its really hard to gauge how they're feeling.
