Did anyone NOT have a 1st b-day party for DC?
I am torn between having a party or not. I would honestly, much rather put the money I would spend on a party into Athan's savings account. Of course Chris and I will celebrate, as will his grandparents... but beyond that we really don't have family down here. And if I start inviting friends, it will get out of hand. Plus, none of our friends have kids so it would just be a bunch of adults. Should I just suck it up and have a big celebration for Athan? I feel like such a bad mom for not wanting to put together a big bash. I would just have the 3 of us have nice small celebration that night. Am I wrong?

You are NOT wrong at all. We had DS's party this past weekend. Family only. It was fun -for the adults.
DS cried because of all the commotion, and missing his nap. I am grateful that we got to see everyone, and for the presents they gave him.
However, I think that waiting until your child is older, and actually enjoys what these celebrations are- makes perfect sense. So you do what you are comfortable with I think you have the right idea!!

We could REALLY use a family vacation so we're thinking of doing Orlando, or maybe Caribeean for a long weekend - his birthday weekend (which is also DH's bday weekend) and then just doing cake with grandparents and immediate family. His bday seems like a good excuse to get away

We aren't having a party for him. Just maybe a BBQ for family only (which is about 15 people total).

We didn't-well, my mom and in laws came into town so we had cake, but nothing beyond that.
Since we live out of state, our family is back in NY and we were just starting to get to know people. Now that we know a few more, we may do something for bday number 2.

You're totally not wrong!!
The love you show Athan is every day. It isn't measured by a big, lavish party!
We're not having a big 1st b-day party for Frankie either.
We will be at home enjoying our day together and maybe later on Grandma and my brother's family will come over for his first taste of ice cream cake (they live 6 blocks from us)!
The truth is, he's not going to remember it, and like you said, you can save the money for other things.

Re: Did anyone NOT have a 1st b-day party for DC?
THANKS LADIES!!!! I was just struggling with this decision for some reason. There are so many people that just love him and are our good friends and have been there for us since day 1 of my pregnancy that if we started inviting them all the list would be out of hand. I wouldn't know who to add, who to cut, etc. I would much rather spend the time with Athan and Chris and with his grandma's later on. THANK YOU!!!!!

Re: Did anyone NOT have a 1st b-day party for DC?
We had an home party with just grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins….We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on something he wouldn’t remember so we decided to take the money put some into his account and buy him a swing set in the spring instead.
I also agree, DS had fun at his party but it was really for the adults, he took a long nap while everyone was here so he missed ½ of it! And when he woke up, I swear he gave everyone a look like, “what are you STILL doing here” he was totally overwhelmed with it all, oh and he wanted nothing to do with his gifts either! His cousins opened them for him! He did really enjoy his cake though!

We had a backyard party for DD for her 1st, 2nd & 3rd birthdays. We had a BBQ (easy since she's a summer baby) & invited family & some friends. Nothing extravagant & she still enjoyed herself.

We didn't have big parties for either of our kids. Probably because we have a very small family and don't live near most of them. Its still an important day and a not having a big party does not make it any less fun!
