Did anyone see the article in Newsday and LI school districts getting funding for pre-K programs?
I think it was in Monday or Tuesday's paper about the school districts on Long Island who received state funding to start pre-K programs. A lot of the schools (including the district we live in) DID NOT use the money and are therefore losing it for the following year.
Here's a link to the article online, but it does not give the list of schools who didn't use the money.

My sister was telling me there was info in Tuesday's paper about free preschool. But she made it sound more like they had the number to call and what not.
I didn't get Tuesday's paper so.. did anyone see it?

Re: Did anyone see the article in Newsday and LI school districts getting funding for pre-K programs?
From what I understand..and please dont quote me on this..
Is that school districts receive the money for universal preK but some havent implemented a program. I think they feel that should they implement the program and then the state cut the money off how are they going to pay for the program....
I believe that those districts that offer PreK do so on a lottery system so it's not guarenteed that your child would even get into the program. I know myself that if the cost of PreK was passed onto me (added to my already huge tax bill) and my child didnt get into the PreK (based on a lottery system) Id be pretty PO'd...Now it was on my tax bill AND yet I had to pay to send him somewhere else.
Im just speculating...Im not 100% sure how things go. But I'd be happy to hear from those who live in districts that offer PreK...

yup- i think this is it. I'm a speech therapist at a public school in NJ, and there is talk about the state giving funding for something like this here, too. BUT, like you said i think some of the districts are worried because if they take the money, start the program, and then the state suddenly "runs out of" money in a couple years, the district will be stuck continuing to foot the bill, or canceling the program and having a lot of upset parents. its a tough call.

I believe in many cases, the state is not providing nearly enough funds for pre-K, so many districts are not implementing it, as there is no way to pay for the needed resources.
In many cases, the "fine" for not implementing it is much lower than the additional costs required to run it.

I live in Middle Country SD which has a universal pre-k program, but I am not exactly sure how it works. the website says you can register at any time, and does not mention any kind of lottery system. I will be kind of ticked off if I couldn't get them into the program yet still pay for it through my taxes.
It is only for four year olds, so if I want them to go to pre-school earlier (which I do) I will still have to pay for a program.

Comsewogue also has a Lottery but I have yet to hear of anyone being turned down. I guess it is just if too many people apply they can only accomodate so many. Depending on funding it may or may not be available when your child goes to school. The did not have it the year DD#1 could have gone, we will see with #2. I just look at it like it is a bonus if they have it and she gets in, if not she stays at her pre-school that I love.

FYI Middle Country has two pre-k/kindergarten centers, which are AWESOME.

Damien had a fabulous kindergarten experience. He didn't do pre-k there because he went to the one at my job but one of good friends DS goes and they love it!!

The Pre-k is now spread out over several sites and all children in the district are accepted.
