Did anyone see the documentary on HBO on election fraud?

Last night about the voting conspiracy? It was incredible, and deeply, deeply saddening...

Re: Did anyone see the documentary on HBO

basically it was a group of people going around to the swing counties and investigating the election results, demanding recounts. The counties are REQUIRED to keep everything, but they found votes in trash bags, and when they did the recounts, nothing added up. The documentary then went into a discussion of Diebold, the company that manufactures and distributes the electronic polling machines, who, not coincidentally, has strong ties to the republican party. The company claims that the machines CANNOT be tampered with, but the nonprofit organization hired a computer genious, who discovered that the memory card has a HIDDEN writable program in it that can be manipulated to change the polling results, and they literally proved it. It was frightening really...

Re: Did anyone see the documentary on HBO on election fraud?

And of course, I just googled Diebold and an article came up about how the company demanded that HBO cancel the show Chat Icon

Here is a synopsis of the show from HBO:

Electronic voting machines count about 87% of the votes cast in America today. But are they reliable? Are they safe from tampering? From a current congressional hearing to persistent media reports that suggest misuse of data and even outright fraud, concerns over the integrity of electronic voting are growing by the day. And if the voting process is not secure, neither is America's democracy. The timely, cautionary documentary HACKING DEMOCRACY exposes gaping holes in the security of America's electronic voting system.

In the 2000 presidential election, an electronic voting machine recorded minus 16,022 votes for Al Gore in Volusia County, Fla. While fraud was never proven, the faulty tally alerted computer scientists, politicians and everyday citizens to the very real possibility of computer hacking during elections.

In 2002, Seattle grandmother and writer Bev Harris asked officials in her county why they had acquired electronic touch screen systems for their elections. Unsatisfied with their explanation, she set out to learn about electronic voting machines on her own. In the course of her research, which unearthed hundreds of reported incidents of mishandled voting information, Harris stumbled across an "online library" of the Diebold Corporation, discovering a treasure trove of information about the inner-workings of the company's voting system.

Harris brought this proprietary "secret" information to computer security expert Dr. Avi Rubin of Johns Hopkins University, who determined that the software lacked the necessary security features to prevent tampering. Her subsequent investigation took her from the trash cans of Texas to the secretary of state of California and finally to Florida, where a "mini-election" to test the vulnerability of the memory cards used in electronic voting produced alarming results.

As the scope of her mission grew, Harris drew on the expertise of other computer- science experts, politicians and activists, among them: Andy Stephenson, candidate for secretary of state in Washington state; Susan Bernecker, Republican candidate in New Orleans; Kathleen Wynne, an activist from Cleveland; Dr. Herbert Thompson, chief security strategist, Security Innovation, Inc.; Ion Sancho, supervisor of elections for Leon County, Fla.; and Harri Hursti, a computer-security analyst. Academics, public officials and others seen in interview footage include: Deanie Lowe, supervisor of elections, Volusia County, Fla.; Mark Radke, marketing director of Diebold; David Cobb, presidential candidate, Green Party; and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Ohio.

Diebold software, or other software like it, is installed in thousands of counties across 32 states. David Dill, professor of computer science at Stanford, says the problem is that there are "lots of people involved in writing the software, and lots of people who could have touched the software before it went into that machine. If one of those people put something malicious in the software and it's distributed to all the machines, then that one person could be responsible for changing tens of thousands of votes, maybe even hundreds of thousands, across the country."

In Florida, Leon County supervisor of elections Ion Sancho presided over a trial "mini-election" to see if the vote could be hacked without being detected. Before votes were actually cast, computer analyst Harri Hursti "stuffed the ballot box" by entering votes on the computer's memory card. Then, after votes were cast, the results displayed when the same memory card was entered in the central tabulating program indicated that fraud was indeed possible. In other words, by accessing a memory card before an election, someone could change the results - a claim Diebold had denied was possible.

Ultimately, Bev Harris' research proved that the top-secret computerized systems counting the votes in America's public elections are not only fallible, but also vulnerable to undetectable hacking, from local school board contests to the presidential race. With the electronic voting machines of three companies - Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia - collectively responsible for around 80 percent of America's votes today, the stakes for democracy are high.

One of the executive producers of HACKING DEMOCRACY is Sarah Teale, whose previous HBO credits include "Dealing Dogs" and "Bellevue: Inside Out."

HACKING DEMOCRACY was directed by Simon Ardizzone and Russell Michaels; produced by Simon Ardizzone, Robert Carrillo Cohen and Russell Michaels; executive producers, Earl Katz, Sarah Teale and Sian Edwards; edited by Sasha Zik. For HBO: supervising producer, John Hoffman; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

What is most frightening to me is that the government knows all this now, but they aren't doing anything about it. They know the high potential for fraud, but in this very contentious and important election, it sounds like they are still going to use this system.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone see the documentary on HBO on election fraud?

It just keeps getting better and better:

"Wally" O'Dell, the chairman of the board and chief executive of Diebold. For years, O'Dell has given generously to Republican candidates. Last September, he held a packed $1,000-per-head GOP fundraiser at his 10,800-square-foot mansion. He has been feted as a guest at President Bush's Texas ranch, joining a cadre of "Pioneers and Rangers" who have pledged to raise more than $100,000 for the Bush reelection campaign. Most memorably, O'Dell last fall penned a letter pledging his commitment "to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President."

He's the CEO of the very company that provides over 80% of polling machines, and vehemently claimed that the machines COULD NOT be tampered with, even though testing revealed that the memory cards had a hidden writable program that could alter polling results, without any paper trail.

Democracy is so corrupt in the country. It sickens me. A few years ago I did some volunteer work trying to get students and others to register to vote. We set up a "fake practice booth" to help them learn how to use the machines. Many people don't vote because of the fear of not knowing what to do at the machine. Anyway it was the 1st Bush Jr election. Afterward one of the students saw me & was like "I voted & all my friends voted & Bush still won anyway."

I have to say, before I saw the documentary I didn't believe in any kind of "tampering" so to speak, and just assumed that Bush was re-elected because the majority of people in this country are XXX, but now I'm starting to wonder Chat Icon I will still vote on Tuesday though because I am an idealist. The results will be interesting, to say the least.

Didn't see the documentary. But, I think it is very unfair to call people who voted for Bush "ignorant" simply because their political beliefs differ from yours. I voted for Bush. Certainly not thrilled with everything about his presidency, but do consider myself pretty well informed and educated. Not "ignorant."

I wish I were not at work so I could send you all the articles about people being falsely turned away from the polls in FLA. They used racial profiling to turn away demographics that are mostly democrats, while letting demographics that were mostly Republican into the same polls. They lied to the people they turned away telling them the polls were down and to come back later. Of course when they came back later the polls were still "broken" even though people were still coming out having just voted.

Also, they busloads of immigrants (legal & registered voters) also in Florida were taken to remote polls. This was supposed to be offered as a service to "encourage" the immigrant population to vote. Of course when they got there it was not their polling place, so the drivers made them "wait for confirmation of where they were supposed to go" by then the polls were closed in their district. And don't even get me started about the butterfly punch & Pat Buchanan...Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone see the documentary on HBO on election fraud?

Just to play devils advocate here....

When I voted on LI, my neighbor told me that he voted for his dead father (he was a Jr. and they have similar names) and they let him vote twice!!!!!Chat Icon

He told me he voted for the democratic candidate. The people at the polling site did not notice that he came back twice.

FYI..Just wanted to share another side to this conspiracy. I worked for a non-profit organization for a LONG time. I was the ONLY republican in the office. Not many knew I was part of the "evil republicans" as many of them called us. I saw so much fraudulent cr@p with signing up voters for the 2004 election that I was disgusted. I worked in Harlem the last six moths of my time there and what I saw was a LARGE reason why I quit. Also I received harassing emails and intranet blogs about Presdent Bush, Abortion rights, and how if anyone votes for a republican they are "ignorant and uneducated" about the issues. I was so offended that I asked this to be removed from the intranet blog. They laughed at me and said that it was appropriate because we were non-profit and do not abide by the same "rules" as a corporate entity.

You know, not ALL Republicans are as you have described. I worked in a non-profit because I felt called to make a difference in the lives of people. Although, I felt I made a difference, the sh!t I received from the board of the non profit on down was unbearable and that is why I eventually left.

ETA: NOT ALL REPUBLICANS ARE INGNORANT!!!!! WE DO NOT JUST "DRINK THE KOOLAID" AND GO ALONG WITH BUSH ON EVERYTHING. In 2004, when it was Bush vs. Kerry, Kerry did not give me a better reason to vote for him. He had not plan to get out of Iraq, and his stance on security was to have the UN approve EVREYTHING we do to defend ourselves. UMMM yeah, that will work. Chat Icon
I do not agree witht he Iraq war and agree that we need a plan to get out. I also want to keep my taxes low and keep more of my paycheck.

I hear what you are saying - what I find MOST disturbing about the entire situation is that there is a HUGE potential for polling alteration/tampering, whether it be republican OR democratic, I find it utterly despicable that we continue to use electronic voting machines in 80% of the locations that CAN be altered. This means to me that any election, ANY win is in disrepute, whether it's republican or democrat. The only reason why I question the republicans in this instance is because 2 of the 3 largest distributors happen to have significant republican backing, and one of them, Diebold, who has strong links to the president wholeheartedly denied that the machines can be tampered with when it so clearly can be.

I understand what you are saying. Tampering is horrible no matter what side you are on. My DH is a computer programmer and said that you can think something is air tight code and someone can hack it, proving you wrong.
Maybe they thought they covered their bases and a genius was able to hack in. It happens all the time, according to my DH. I see where you are going with the ties to the republican party, but please keep in mind that media is usually biased and take what this investigation said with a grain of salt.

Dandr10199- Funny (well not really) that your cronies at the non profit assume republicans are "ignorant and uneducated." I have experienced similar attitudes in college/law school (liberal ivies...) I think Dems have a knee jerk response to claim conservatives = ignorant as the above post demonstrates. Conservative is not synonymous with ignorant. (Although in JohnKerrySpeak, military is synonomous with uneducated. Chat Icon )

I disagree with liberals and democrats on the majority of issues. I, however, respect their position and don't automatically assume that they are ignorant.... Unfortunately, in my experience, this is not always a 2 way street.
