I didn't see this but its funny u posted it b.c when I was thinking about adding cereal to dd bottle to help her reflux everyone I spoke to that had done it with their child *not to be mean* but there kids are all overweight now. It may just be a coincidence or not but I did notice it.

I think it is a load of bull My DC ate it A LOT as a baby and is the skinniest kid ever.
I think it has a lot to do with lack of exercise/ starting video games younger and younger and fast food/ junk food.

Sounds like b.s. Obesity is related to an excess intake of calories moreso than white rice. If you substitute brown rice for white, your kid can still be obese if they eat too much.

Re: did anyone see this on the news last night...Rice Cereal *may* be linked to childhood obesity!?!?!
As a dietitian I have a few "comments".
Yes, I agree that you should not add cereal to a baby bottle b/c it adds additional calories, decreases nutrients and protein and changing sucking mechanism. I advise my patients to wait till 4mths and spoon feed. However, for severe reflux where a thickened formula and meds do not work, you have no choice.
However, I do not thing that rice cereal is the reason for childhood obesity. As I see it the reasons for most childhood obesity is a poor nutritional diet - kids eating chicken nuggets, processed foods, and other nutrient sparing foods on a daily basis, limited veggies, and fruits, limited exercise, too much tv/video games/computer use, genetics, and behavior. Kids learn from us, if we eat crap, so will they. If we are inactive, they will be too. It's much more than one simple factor. There are so many factors in play for while childhood obesity is an epidemic. I think it is a bad statement to say that 1 food is a big issue for increasing obesity.

DS was a skinny nothing when he was born..i added rice into his bottles at 4 weeks old..and my neighbor said to me"just watch how they chunk up with the rice.." and sure enough..he chunked up.
but really.. have no way of know if that had anything to do with it. DS is not overweight by anymeans.

Yes but I also think most kids " chunk up" at a certain age. Cereal or not. That is just them eating more ( solids / milk ) and not being able to really move around yet. Once they get active they almost always slim out quickly.

Re: did anyone see this on the news last night...Rice Cereal *may* be linked to childhood obesity!?!?!
I actually believe this, I only give rice cereal for a week, then after give it only for diarrhea. I don't think it applies to all babies, I think its something like relating to body type.
I try to lay low on the carbs with DS and myself in general. They are low in nutrients and usually fortified with fake ones, and I rather offer DS more naturally nutrient rich foods that happen to have carbs in them, like fruit or veggies.

I think its BS!! At the end of the news bit they had they said there were no studies or concrete evidence to back this... just his theory.
I started my DD on rice cereal (spoon fed) by 4 months. She is now almost 6 months and she is at the 50th percentile for height and weight. Perfect by all means.

It's funny you posted this bc our neonatologist that still follows DS told us at his last appt that rice cereal in bottles makes the baby chubby. I asked my Ped & they said if put in every bottle it tends to make the child gain more rapidily.

Give me a break... childhood obesity is caused by poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle.
