Did anyone take Zofran and have it not work or make them sicker when it wore off?

Hey Ladies, I have a question.

I was SOOOO sick during my entire pregnancy with ds. I threw up every single day and was just nauseous all the time. However, I wasn't really throwing up too much food (Chat Icon sorry) more like just some food, fluids, and A LOT of just heaving. I refused to take the Zofran my OB prescribed b/c I was just nervous it would do something to the baby. In retrospect I thought that was kind of silly since I was also pretty free with Zantac the whole time, lol. I don't know what got into my head that Zofran would cause a terrible deformity but a million Zantacs would be okie dokie but my crazy brain is another post I guess...

Anyway, I have a new OB this time and he prescribed it again and told me to just fill it and have it. The night before last I was sooo sick I finally took it but then I couldn't hold back and I'm pretty sure I vomited it up and then I just fell asleep. I tend to get very sick in the afternoon and stay that way all evening, so yesterday I thought I would try and take the 4mg of Zofran in the morning- I thought that way I could sort of try it out without risking throwing it back up again.

I felt pretty okay during the early day but honestly I often have some decent time usually around those hours so I wasn't sure if it was the Zofran or not. THEN around 3pm I started getting SO SO SICK. I was Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ALL FREAKING NIGHT. I can't help but wonder if it was some kind of rebound effect from the medicine or what.

On top of that today I read some girl's story on another board saying that she had 2 missed mcs and each dated the fetus' demise the same day as she took Zofran. I know it's most likely coincidental but of course now I am so paranoid- especially after I got so sick last night.

Thanks for reading if you got this far and any experiences are appreciated.

I took Zofran... it helped, especially when I took it at night so I wouldn't wake up nauseous. I tried to limit my Zofran to 1-2x per day since I found it caused terrible constipation, so one problem became another.

Maybe it's naive, but I trust that my doctor wouldn't give me anything I couldn't take. He wouldn't even allow me to use ear drops for itchy ears, so if he allowed Zofran, I figured it was okay!

Good luck and I hope you feel better!

I've been on Zofran since the beginning of my pregnancy. I'm almost 14 weeks now and had complications with it. When I was on 4mg. of Zofran it didn't work for me either, so my doctor upped the dosage to 8mg twice a day and it worked wonders. I only needed to take it once a day and now maybe once a week. I hope you feel better soon and get some relief.

maybe you have a virus?

I was put on it last week because I had a terrible virus, and I was still throwing up with it. its not supposed to stop that, just make you feel less queasy, for me it did, but it didn't make it go away.

I would call the dr if you are still so sick in a few days

I know there is a bad condition you can have with pregnancy and extremly bad m/s that 1% of pregnant women get Chat Icon that's not you!

Zofran helped me, but when it wore off, I had a "hangover" from it with a bad headache and dizziness! I only would take it if I was going to be asleep when it wore off, other than that, I just suffered through it!

Didn't work for me. I got the sublinguals that disolve under your tounge and within about an hours I was projectile vomiting and dizzy. I thought it was a fluke and tried again. The same thing happened. I was put on Phenergan and was on that my whole pregnancy with Emmy due to severe hyperemesis. It never really went away and while the Phenergan helped, I was still always nauseaus just not vomiting. I can assure you it's not just you that found Zofran to be worse then the actual vomitingChat Icon

Re: Did anyone take Zofran and have it not work or make them sicker when it wore off?

I have been taking it for the past 2 and a half weeks. It has changed my world. I feel slightly functional. Since the first few days I have not thrown up within the 8 hour window that it lasts for. I'm currently in the 8 hour window and nauseous as all hell, but not actively vomiting.
I also go to bed with a headache every night. The pros for me out weighed the cons.

I only agreed to take it after my OB said she took it for her first and third pregnancies.

Good Luck

I took it and it didn't help me, so I stopped. The side effects stink.

Re: Did anyone take Zofran and have it not work or make them sicker when it wore off?

I took it for a very short period of time because it either gave me a headache or caused me to be sleepy. It did not help my nausea/vomiting. So I just dealt with the severe nausea and vomiting until wk 22. When I googled zofran I didn't find any significant studies in regards to defects or birth complications. HTH

I tried it but got horrible migraines and constipation. It didn't stop the feeling of nausea but I did stop vomiting. However with those side effects I couldn't take it...migraine with a 17mth old to run around after.......yeah right.Chat Icon
