Did I buy the wrong food?
We started solids on Saturday. I decided to start with Oatmeal because with her being sick I didn't want to constipate her with rice.
Anyway I bought the Gerber stage 1 fruits and veggies in the plastic cups. They seem sooo big. Should I have gotten the little jars to start???
I've only been doing 1 tbsp of oatmeal so far, when do I start increasing that and adding fruit? Do I put the fruit in the cereal or feed them separately?
Thanks

Re: Did I buy the wrong food?
I started giving him 1/2 a jar, just to taste it and get used to the spoon. I waited a week before increasing the amount of cereal, and mixed fruit in slowly w/the cereal so he could get used to the taste gradually. Basically I just followed his lead and introduced things slowly using cereal as the base. I did the same w/oatmeal and only recently came back to Rice (he was constip. from it) and it's working out fine now.

same here...you dont have to give her the whole container. I like them better than the glass jars. You can always refrigerate what they dont use.

Re: Did I buy the wrong food?
I only gave my DD a tsp of cereal for a few days. I wanted to make sure that her body was able to digest and pass it. I started a tsp of fruit a few days later. I mixed the cereal with breast milk and would put a little cereal and a little fruit on the spoon together. My DD loved it. I started her with prunes as her first fruit because her bowels were so irregular. It kept things moving. As to the size of the container, it would last at least 3 days. They don't recommend keeping it any longer than that. In the beginning, I had to throw out a little food but that didn't last too long.

Wow I guess Ryan is a chunker! He's never had a problem finishing a fruit or veggie, Stage 1 or stage 2.

Re: Did I buy the wrong food?
I would just stick to the cereal for a few days so she can get use to whole idea of solid foods. Then slowly introduce the fruit. You can mix it or give the fruit by itself. I would put a small amount of fruit in its own bowl and feed from that bow, this way if she dosen't take it all you can store the rest in the fridge. If you feed her directly from the container itself you can contaminate the food and would have to throw it out if she dosen't finish it all.

Re: Did I buy the wrong food?
My Dr. told me to stick with cereal for 3 weeks before intruding fruits and veggies- I waited 2 weeks. I still get 3 feedings from each container. I'm sure he could eat half, if not a whole, container. But right now I'm just trying to get him used to the flavors and see how they effect him before giving him too much. In fact, I give him cereal for breakfast, a fruit OR a veggie for lunch, and then cereal for dinner. I asked the Dr. if I should be giving him a fruit with breakfast or both fruits and veggies for lunch and he said what I was doing was more than enough.
