Did the hospital tour on Saturday
And while I am delivering out of state, I just wanted to tell you ladies that my boyfriend and I found it EXTREMELY helpful. It totally calmed my fears of what "that day" will be like... from where we check in, to where we park, what floor we go to, etc. The tour was a part of the 6 week child preparedness classes that we have been taking. It was 8 couples and the midwife that has been teaching our classes. She took us on an hour walking tour - from registration, to the L&D floor, and then to the maternity floor. We saw what the rooms look like, how they are set up (all private rooms with a bed for the dad's too), what the monitors do, where we can go to walk while laboring or get clear fluids.
It was wonderful - even though I thought I was going to hypervenilate when we sat in the L&D room. I started tearing up and breathing really fast. I guess seeing it all, and how they prep the bed for delivery and stuff... made me panic a bit. I am terrified of giving birth and being there made it seem inevitable (in a good way of course, but it still made me scared).
After the walking tour the midwife took us into a conference room and answered questions that we had, went over the signs of labor again, when we should call the doctors office, what symptoms we should be concerned about, etc.
Anyway, not sure if your hospitals offer these tours but we really enjoyed ours. Granted, it's nothing earth-shattering, but it did help me visualize where I would be and what would happen on that day.
