I was wondering, for those of you who had the epidural, did they shut it off when you started to push? It still bothers me that I wasnt told this was the doctors practice. Just wondering how many others had their epi turned off during the worst part of labor (in my opinion anyway LOL).

nope, I don't think so. If they did, I didn't feel a difference.

I don't think they turned it off, but it did wear off at the end, they put more in, but it wasn't working in time...the last two pushes HURT, but by the time they were stitching I didn't feel a thing.

Re: Did they shut off your epidural when it was time to push??

yes they did

when the dr checked me at 530 pm I was 10 cm and ready to go. He said we would begin pushing in 30 minutes.

At that time they stopped the epi.

Re: Did they shut off your epidural when it was time to push??

Mine started to wear off at 6cm so they gave me more, than I started to feel the urge to push at 9cm and they left everything the way it was no xtra epidural but they didn't turn it off either. I think they only turn it off if they feel you're pushing is not being effective.

They were suppose to shut mine off when I got to a certain point but I dilated so quickly there was no time.. It was very hard to push her out because I couldn't feel anything, then the cord was wrapped around her neck so with every contraction her heartbeat was going down to 60, they were giving me a few more times then I would have went for an emergency c-section.. No c-section for us...

I was really surprised about this. My doctor never told me this was standard practice (with her anyway) and I am pretty upset that it was never told to me. I pushed for almost 4 hours. The minute I was 10 cm, the nurse came in and said they were shutting it off. I started to literally scream that they couldnt do that and she said that my doctor said to. When my doctor got there (after about an hour of pushing with the nurse) I was begging for it to be turned back on. Nope, nothing! They said I wouldnt be able to feel anything if it was on and I would be pushing longer. Longer than almost 4 hours??????????? Wound up in c section anyway..which makes me even more mad to be honest. I was just wondering if this was standard practice all the time which I see its not.

I want to say that they left it but didn't give me anymore and started towear off. I felt the urge to push and the contractions were coming back to back which I felt but it was time for the episomity I didnt fell anything and then whey stiched me up the Dr. had to use alot of Lidicane because I felt everything so I am assuming the epi wore off at that time and no more was given.

I didn't have an epidural but understood this to be standard practice. They turn off the epidural at the end. Epidurals slow down labor & at that point you need to push with all of your might.

Re: Did they shut off your epidural when it was time to push??

Yep, I was at 10 cm for about 15-20 minutes so the epi could wear off. She just kept saying if you feel the urge to push let me know. By the time I did, I felt LOTS!

With my 1st, it wore off when I was about 9 cm. I pushed for 2 hours. The pain sukked, but I just wanted him/her out!!!! Chat Icon

With my 2nd, they turned it off at "9 1/2 w/ a rim" Chat Icon I progressed very quickly to 10 cm and pushed less than 5 minutes w/ him! Chat Icon Quite frankly, the tear felt much worse than the pain of contractions. Chat Icon

They lowered it when it was time to push and increased it for the stitches.

Nope. They told me I was going to be a few hours and just turned it up. When they check 45 mins later she was crowned and 5 pushes later DD was out. It did not slow down my labor one bit.

They told me the same thing, but they missed it and shut it off at that point but I still couldn't feel anything, and she was coming luckily I pushed her out in 33 mins, I don't know where I found the strength but I knew she was in distress..
