Did twins run in the family?
I've heard mixed information regarding the possibility of having twins....I have twins in my family and wanted to know what brought about your beautiful blessings?
I'm currently TTC and wanted to know how likely that I would have twins? Lately that's all I think about and dream about it too.
Thanks girls

Re: Did twins run in the family?
They are in my family on both my mom's side & dad's but I've read that it only runs in the women's side (woman is the one who drops the 2 eggs). I also read taking extra folic acid brings on twins - I have to admit that I was doing that - I was taking a supplement besides my prenatal.

Re: Did twins run in the family?
We have them on both sides but we had identicals which spontaneously occur. Good luck to you!

Re: Did twins run in the family?
Approximately 60% of all twins born today are as a result of fertility treatments. That's the main reason why there are so many these days.
They run on my Dad's side but of course, like Laura said, that would do me know good.

Same here! We have a set of fraternal twins on a side, but my sister and I are the next generation to for them. Scary if that is me. But it would be great also.

We have identicals, and neither of us have twins on either side of our families.

If they are on your Dad's side, he can pass it to you. If your DH had twins on his side it would mean nothing.
Mine are identical and don't run in my family.

Re: Did twins run in the family?
My mother's father was a twin, her sister had twins, my sister had a twin pregnancy that she sadly miscarried.
I was also told that over 35 your chances increase and DH is convinced that an increased intake of dairy foods will do it too. I think he read some ridiculous article in a magazine.

the closer you get to 35, the more they increase, but after age 35, however, the chance of having twins naturally decreases. (not taking fertility treatments into account).

I read that too. The study came out while I was pregnant last year.

Re: Did twins run in the family?
the older you get the higher chances of twins, because the older you get the chance of releasing 2 eggs is higher. My dad is a twin, but my boys are from fertility treatments.

I thought the chance of having identical was higher with age (not fraternal) b/c the quality of the egg wasn't as great, so it splits?

My eggs are low quality Honestly I got so many books on twins when i found out and while they had pages and pages of why fraternals happen (both naturally and through fertility treatments) there was like a paragraph that went something like this:
"While identical twins stay constant throughout the population as 1 in 250 chances, the science community still has not idea why they happen."
I also read somewhere "it's a genetic mutation that happens, but no cause has yet to be determined"
Then there was the stats that identicals most likely occure in woman over 35, African-Americans, and have had at least one kid. Yeah, I am none of those....
So they really have no idea why identicals occur from everything I gathered.
Also, I read somewhere the chances of having another set of identicals after having one set is 1 in 70,000. Well, I get TWINS magazine and in the back moms can send in pictures of their twins and what type of twins they are. I think in the past year of magazines I have gotten, there has been at least one picture of a mom who has 2 sets of identicals. So I don't think they really have any idea.
I just think they are a wonderful result of nature

Twins were a HUGE suprise for us. They weren't on either side. Now, I look at them as a blessing from above!

I've always wanted twins but it only runs on my dad's side of the family. My grandpa (his dad) was an identical twin.

Re: Did twins run in the family?
Ive had 2 sets of identical twins...
I had a dr tell me once that some people are just prone to identical twins..and that if you have 2 sets your chances of having a 3rd set actual increase....So while it is fraternal twins that run in families there does appear to be something in certain people that just makes those eggs split...There is an article online somewhere about it...I cant find it....
Ive had twins, singleton, twins, singleton, and Im STOPPING...next time around Im due for twins...
