Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
Is this common, and what is involved?

We did not have it done, so I don't know what was involved. I guess given our backgrounds, the doctor didn't think it was necessary.

So is it something a doctor reccomends?
I know literally nothing about it, FH is insiting on it, although I don't think we have a lot to worry about since we are SO genetically different.

Since we are both Ashkenazi Jews, we will, b/c there are several disorders associated with our heritage.

Re: Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
I would ask your doctor if they think it's necessary, that's what I did. I don't really know enough about it to help you out, though. Sorry! I do know that when I found out I was pregnant, they test you for certain genetic diseases anyway, and some they only do if you and your DH have a specific ethnic background.

Since things like Tay Sachs (sp?) are recessive, we don't have to worry about that, but I think this is the kind of thing FH is worried about!
ETA: Maybe because most of his family is ashkenazis married to ashkenazi's, he thinks it's a necessary test everyone does, because THEY have all done it.

Don't be sorry. I'm just mainly curious. Brought it up for discussion's sake.

I guess if it were to put my mind at ease or JT's mind at ease, I would have done it anyway because in the end, if my doctor really didn't think there was anything to worry about, the tests would probably come back fine anyway, and the peace of mind for whomever was worrying would be worth it.

Right..for almost all of these disorders, I believe that you both need to be carriers. I would get screened first, and if I wasn't a carrier for anything, then he wouldn't even have to be screened.

Re: Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
We did. Mostly because we're both ashkenazi jews and there are a lot of genetic diseases common to our heritage. What really spurred me to do it is that I have a very close friend who didn't get genetic testing until she was pregnant. It turned out that she and her husband both tested positive for a fatal genetic disease and had to go through some really emotionally difficult times while the doctors tested and re-tested the fetus to make sure it didn't carry it...

Actually, when I got pregnant, at my first doctor visit, I was asked if I was an ashkenazi jew for that very reason. If you check YES on the questionnaire, the doctor's office does mandatory testing. It's a simple process, really - my DH had blood taken to test for all 10 diseases - his came back positive for 2 so they then took blood from me to test for only those 2 diseases, because it's only significant if both parents are carriers of the same disease.

Re: Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
We weren't going to have it done, and then my first cousin was diagnosed with cycstic fibrosis around the time we were starting to TTC. We held off, and I went for the cycstic fibrosis test (both parents need to be carriers in order for the child to get cycstic fibrosis)- I turned out to not be a carrier which was a huge relief.
So- i suppose genetic testing really depends on if you have anything that runs in your family.

We are not TTC yet, but I have thought about genetic testing, although my doctor told me he didn't feel it would be necessary.

Re: Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
DH and I debated it because I have a handicapped cousin. However, it was a mutation, not a genetic disorder. My other cousin (the sister of the hanidcapped cousin) had genetic testing done before she began TTCing and the doctor said that our family history is fine (for that side of the family at least). I don't think we need to.

For us it's not an issue, but for some it can be. If there was family history, yes, we would.

I dont mean this to be intrusive at all but I believe you said you were adopted, so you dont really know too much of your genetic makeup so to be honest if I were you I would get the testing done just to be on the safe side.

I think this is another reason FH wants it done. It can't hurt!

It's definitely a good idea, but keep in mind, pre-TTC testing is extremely expensive. Most insurance companies don't cover it unless you are already pregnant. Otherwise, testing for each disease costs about $500. DH and I had ours done through a non-profit program in Philadelphia that provides free testing to Ashkenazi jewish couples who are married. Otherwise, it would have cost us over $3000.00

I was supposed to get tested for CF as it runs in my family and my mom, brother and nieces are carriers. I didn't until after I got pregnant. It was pretty stressful waiting for results. DH got tested also. Turns out I am a carrier, but DH is not.
We'll have Andrew tested at some point just so he'll be aware for the future.

Re: Did/Will you and SO have genetic testign before having children?
As I mentioned in another post, we have a chromosome disorder (a balanced translocation) in DH's family. He needs to get a blood test to test for it. I may take one too. I would like to know if my kids have it so they don't have to go through years of miscarriage & infertility. If they have it, it should only affect them when they TTC. I'd rather find out if they have the same chromosome issue as their grandmother and save them the heartache up front. Also for research purposes, I think it's important to add to the database on the disorder.
If we were having a 3rd child, we would both get tested. The idea that we've lucked out with 2 healthy kids when there was half a chance that they wouldn't have made it this far is enough not to tempt fate again.
eta. for this chromosome defect, you only need one carrier.
