Only because we needed fertility treatments and they did it as a matter of course. If I had gotten pg on my own, than no.

I got tested but was clueless as to the risks of any genetic disorders or my chances of being a carrier. I did it just at the suggestion of my then OB. I came back positive as a carrier for Cystic fibrosis so they ordered a script for my husband and he got blood work done..as we awaited he results, I found out I was pregnant. Then we got the call that he too is a carrier. The chances of that are pretty phenomenal.

Neither of us know anyone with Cf and it was a complete shock. It was a huge blow to us and our families and made what was a happy time, an incredibly scary one. Every pregnancy I have a 25% chance of having a child with CF. I urge everyone to do the testing if they can.

Edited for grammar, spelling...

Oh wow. So scary. I hope your baby is ok. My friends niece has cystic fibrosis.

Thank you! He is healthy and CF free thank God.

This is my situation also. I don't find out we were both carriers until after I was pregnant. We are lucky and both dc do not have CF. I didn't stress too much during each pregnancy knowing that this was a fairly new test (about 10 years old). No clue about our parents, don't know if one or both are carriers or not.
One of my children is a carrier and the other most likely isn't but testing would be required to rule it out.

I was never advised to do any of this testing, so it never crossed my mind. But are doctors able to test the baby in utero if they're at risk for these generic diseases? Or is it information you don't have until the baby is born?

Yes! I did because I went to a fertility specialist. I ended up being a carrier for PKU with 2 mutations so I had to see a genetic counselor even though DH was not a carrier. He is a carrier for something else. The good thing with PKU is now they test in the hospital at birth thankfully both boys were negative

an amnio will test for most genetic disorders.
If you are both carriers they would recommend an amnio at that point

Re: Did you do genetic testing before ttc?

We were both tested for Cystic Fibrosis since I knew for a fact my sibling was a carrier. I ended up being a carrier as well, but thankfully my DH is not.

Did you do genetic testing before ttc?

Yes, because aside from the fact that I had IVF. I have MS. We don't know the risks of this, but I wanted to be sure.

Did you do genetic testing before ttc?

We are both Ashkenazi Jews so yes. I had a full panel done before I got pregnant and only because it was determined I was not a carrier for anything did my husband not have to get tested.

Re: Did you do genetic testing before ttc?

No but the OB must have checked after I was already pregnant because they let me know I'm a carrier for CF and then my husband needed to get tested. He ended up not being a carrier.
