My mom is my right-hand. If she passed *unexpectedly*, I have no doubt in my mind that I'd have to be institutionalized & have to be on sedatives. That sounds needy, but it's the truth.
This is exactly how I feel if god forbid something happened to either one of my parents. This keeps me up at night sometimes

My parents are not perfect - they each have issues, and as a result, so do I. BUT, they have made me who I am today - a strong, self-sufficient, caring, intelligent, empathetic woman. For that I am happy I have the parents I have.
This is how I feel. My mom has A LOT of faults and that has caused us to have a VERY VERY strained relationships but I have learned positive things from her as well as ways not to be like her. We're working to get our relationship back on track so maybe one day ...
And my dad, I love my dad. Thank goodness for him. But he too has faults but he is the best and I will always be his little girl (and he constantly reminds me )

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
When I was younger I did....we just didn't have any common ground.
Now I wouldn't trade them for any parents in the entire world. My dad is gone but he was the BEST and my mom is my best friend...it just took us years to get to that place...

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
well I never met my dad. I can't say I wish I had a different mom, I wish my mom would grow up and be a completely different person with most issues. She doesn't know how to parent but she has a good heart. KWIM?

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
Maybe when I was a teenager and they wouldn't let me do everything I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. But overall.. no, not really.
My parents were loving, respectful of who I was as a person and invested in who I was becoming.
I miss them terribly and couldn't imagine life with any other family.

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
When I was a teenager, my mom was pretty strict so I would wish I had a different mom. Otherwise, no way! I have great parents who are awesome to me and my family. I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't for them

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
I won the friggin parental LOTTO I am convinced of it. I had years and years of not getting along with either my mom or dad or both simultaneously, but they never stopped being who they were and never stopped loving me. Simply put I needed to grow up and take responsibility for my *own* happiness. Once I could do that, my parents became my best friends in the world.
Mark Twain's quote is so accurate for me (but let's maybe add 10 years to the ages):
“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
My immediate reaction, and how I answered the poll, is no, I would not wish for a different father, but would wish for a different monther. But now that I think about it, I don't think I'd change anything. My mother left my sister and I when I was 7 and she was 3 to follow a man to another state. She made millions of empty promises while my father put her name on Christmas presents, sent gifts to the house when she said she had so we wouldn't be upset, etc. My Dad is an amazing man who raised two young girls all by himself and I think he did a pretty darn good job. If my mom hadn't been a piece of crap and left, I would have never been able to see my father for the truly amazing person he is.

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
I wouldn't be the person I am today if I had different parents. Good, bad or indifferent, my parents are who they are. To change them, I would change me. Not even something I would consider.
ETA: My dad died when I was 6. I barely remember him. My mom raised 4 kids on her own and has never remarried. My mom has flaws, she isn't perfect, she has almost as many issues as Time Magazine, she is still my mom and the challenges we faced TOGETHER helped me become the fantastic person I am today.

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
Well my parents are sort of unique, so I chose yes, because when I was young I wished I had different parents all the time.
I was raised mostly by my grandparents, with the help of my aunt and uncle. My grandparents were amazing, and I could not have asked for better parents than them. My grandmother died when I was 8, my grandfather when I was 19. I've lived on my own since then, but my aunt & uncle have always been there for me.
I've lived through a lot, but I would never change it. I have a great life, even if it took a lot of twists and turns to get here.
So although I wished for different parents when I was young, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out.

No. Once I became an adult I especially appreciated them; there were times when I was definitely an ungrateful child.

Never. Even during my teenage years when I fought with my mom all the time, I never wanted to trade her in.
I just wish I still had them.

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
Even at their strictest, I never wanted different parents. Never. I knew even then how lucky I had it with them - I will love them beyond this life. I never want to lose them. EVER.

NEVER my parents are everything to me. I love them for who they are and always did and always will. Only thing I've ever wished is that my mom stopped smoking.

Re: Did you ever wish you had different parents?
Growing up not so much but now absolutely. My dad didn't walk me down the aisle on my wedding day and didn't come to my wedding because I was marrying a Catholic (p.s. I am catholic as well) and rarely sees my son. My mom has some serious issues right now that makes me Life is hell right now with her. So yes right now I would love different parents.
