Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I used a midwife for my last two births. I wanted a natural childbirth (my last was a homebirth) and I felt I got more support from a midwife than an OB.
Even if you want an epidural, a midwife is a good option. They have lower rates of episiotomys and c-sections as well.

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I had an OB deliver me last time but I think I'll be going to see a midwife for my next one. As the pp stated you get more support from a midwife and more personalized care. I had a very rough delivery last time and I'm hoping a midwife can help me minimize some of the complications I suffered from last time. Most of my complications had to do with pushing technique, position of the baby, something a midwife would be more in tune with since they spend more time with you during labor. In my opinion when it comes to low risk pregnancies and vaginal births they are the experts!

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I used a midwife last time and am again this time. I switched from my OB because I wanted a provider who was supportive of drug-free birth. I had a very good birth experience.
I didn't use a doula really because of $$, but I have heard very good things about them.
What are you confused about?

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I had a midwife and had an epidural. I have a very low pain threshold. I like that their practice is very supportive of medicated and unmedicated births. I also felt more comfortable having a woman deliver my baby vs. having a male (personal choice) which could've been a possibility at the group I was previously with since it was a mixed practice and you get whomever is on call. I switched at 20 weeks and delivered at almost 36, so I didn't get to meet all of them at the practice, but I highly recommend them. www.stonybrookmidwives.com (if you are nearby). They do a meet the midwives tour once a month at Stony Brook.

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I had both for both my births. I had a hospital birth with a Certified Nurse Midwife. They handled all of my prenatal care and delivery. I had a natural childbirth so the doula was there for labor support. A doula does not provide any kind of medical care.

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I used midwives and was very very happy with them. In the end I did need pain meds and a c-section because I was 2 weeks past due date and DS was transverse. But I have no regrets switching to a midwfie around 20 weeks pregnant. I felt more support from them then I did from my previous ob-gyns and I also felt like I had CHICES.

Re: Did you have a doula or midwife??
I was high risk so I only took the advice of my OB who has a MD who is the only one I trusted with my situation. I will use the same OB this time too.

Midwives support medicated birth also. As long as you are low risk, they are a really good option since they have lower c-section rates than OBs. A doula would probably be less important if you know you want pain medication, because their main job is to comfort you during birth and if you know you want an epi, you may not need that support.
