Did you know dogs can get pink eye?
Apparently, they can. Brinkley has had it since yesterday.
We have an appointment with the vet first thing tomorrow morning but it looks exactly like human pink eye. Gross yellow/green mucus, the whites of the eye are now red, the fleshy corner of his eye is inflamed.
My poor little guy. He doesn't appear to notice that much, he's not even pawing at it. But we missed out on a playdate we were supposed to have today. It's contagious to other dogs and I wouldn't want his dog friend to get it too.
He may have caught it from another dog at daycare, and we can't go back until it's all cleared up either. Ah well, it was a nice three weeks that he was problem-free!

Dogs and cats can get pink eye. You MAY be able to catch it from your dog. Not 100% sure though. I def know you can get ringworm from a dog or cat.
Make sure you wash your hands throughly after medicating the dog's eye.

Yup, we always do wash our hands afterwards. Since it's only in one eye, we are not touching his other eye at all, in the hopes that it won't spread either.

YUP. My mom's dog has it right now. I thought mine did and they have been together (before we knew) so I am on the lookout.

Re: Did you know dogs can get pink eye?
Tricia, the good news is that it looks like it's getting dramatically better pretty fast. The vet confirmed it's conjunctivitis at 9am yesterday and even with only one application of the gel in the eye, he had stopped the yellow tear production.
If we had been given a choice, I would have preferred drops. It's not easy to put something in his eye first of all, but at least drops are quick!

Nope, humans can't contract conjunctivitis from dogs. (I still recommend the hand washing after treating, of course!) It CAN spread from dog to dog.
One of my kittens had pink eye a few months ago. With some drops and lysine, it cleared up in a few weeks. It felt like forever, though!

I had gel for my kitten, too. How are you applying it?
I found the best way to get it in is to stand behind the animal and pull down his lower eyelid until it forms a pocket. Then put the gel into that little pocket.
Of course, getting him to stand still is the hard part.

We're lucky, Brinkley is a pretty good patient. Rusty holds his muzzle up and pulls down his lid and I drop it in from above. Even if he flinches, enough gets in where I can see it coating the eye, and we leave it there a couple of minutes before I gently wipe around the lids.

I hope Brinkley feels better! I had no clue dogs can get pink eye. Thanks for letting us know.

Re: Did you know dogs can get pink eye?
When my dog was alive he used to get pink eye all the time, chronic conjuctivitis. I used to get it all the time too. The vet told me that it was possible for us to keep passing it back and forth to each other and that I needed to be more careful.
