Did you know? (Mirror in car to see the baby)
The fire department just told me I need to remove the mirror that I have to see the baby from my rearview. They said that it's not safe and it could hurt the baby. Anyone else hear of this? I'm upset because I won't be able to see him now, but I'd rather he be safe.

Just the one that's on the review mirror ? Just wondering if this affects the mirror for newborns?

Yes. I was given this same advice with my 1st. I was also advised not to use an underseat mat because it may cause the carseat to slip.

The ones that you can attach to the backseat headrest for rear-facing seat so you can see the baby.
I have one of these attached to my windhshield so I can see both of my boys at the same time. Image Attachment(s):

It's the one you put on the backseat to see the baby in the rearview. It's well documented that in many minor accidents they come off and hit the baby, causing injury.

Re: Did you know? (Mirror in car to see the baby)
when our seat was installed, we were told the same thing. A mirror would be great, but I won't risk it. We were also told by the police officer that it is a driving distraction, to be looking into the mirror

a mirror that is glass is dangerous. we have one that is plexi-glass so we don't have to worry about it shattering on her.

I have this in my car but when I drive DH's truck there is no mirror - so I am getting used to not having it and will wean myself off the mirror in my car.

Re: Did you know? (Mirror in car to see the baby)
Why are they not safe and how can it hurt the baby? I have one that is attached to the sun visor on the passenger seat. To me looking back at the baby is more of a distraction than glancing in a mirror.

Mine is a flimsy thing, not real glass, I can't see how it would hurt the baby in an accident.

None of them are real glass. Imagine it flying at your baby at 50 mph? Or even 20 mph. It's completely a personal decision to keep it, but I would use the super-est (not a word) glue out there to keep it in place.

It's the ones that attach to the rear headseat when the baby is rear-facing. Not the ones used in the front seat.

I used 3 diaper pins to keep mine in place, but now I think I might just take it off anyway. I just love being able to see him

I guess, I just can't see it doing that much damage and it seems to be on there pretty tight, but I guess I will re-evaluate. I really like being able to see her, I have gotten so used to it but she will be front facing soon enough...

Re: Did you know? (Mirror in car to see the baby)
I have a video monitor back there, that is the BEST baby item I have. I LOVE IT!
I call it the "Ella channel" because I can always see what she's up too on the screen (and this is coming from someone who doesn't have ANY monitor in her room at home).
I had a mirror for a few weeks but didn't like it, and you couldn't see her at all in the dark. This camera/monitor has night vision.

Re: Did you know? (Mirror in car to see the baby)
wait are we talking about the soft plastic "mirror" that has the cushy foam all around it and straps onto the back of the backseat head rest?
For rear facing car seats?

Yes. My brother is a police officer and he said he's seen at the scene of accidents where the mirror flew off and hit the baby.

I have one of those mirrors and can't see how it can hurt the baby - i more worried about it being a blindspot for me more than anything - so i always try to be extra careful -

The reason it can hurt the baby is that at 40 miles an hour, the laws of physics make that lightweight item a missile.
