Did you know that farming
is no longer a listed occupation on the US Census?
I didn't know that, until I read this article.

Huh. Interesting.
I thought so.
I thought so especially when thinking about food subsidies...and how we in this country don't pay the actual worth of the food...and we pay less than any other developed country...
I REALLY think it's interesting in light of all the "socialist" talk we've been hearing as of late...as if it was a new concept in our society.
anyway, I am not sure what you meant by your comment...but that is why *I* thought it was interesting.
and timely...since we are all prepping for that feast of all feasts.
maybe someone will buy a fresh turkey this year. or maybe not. who knows.

ETA: Initial reaction to the post. I am still reading the article.
OK interesting that the smaller local farmers are not subsidized. My aunt's land yields crops, and she is classified as a farm for tax purposes, but I never thought to ask her if she gets government subsidies.
I would love to buy land and have a CSA, and I will tell you that trying to get some real answers to research it are not as easy as I thought.
I also like how the article points out that we (society as a whole) consistently eat food that is out of season. I eat mainly organic food, and when I cook for friends sometimes they at some of the dishes or fruits I have. I do make substitutions to traditional dishes according to what is available, and I always get, "What do you mean it is out of season, I saw it in XYZ major grocery last week." When I explain it they get even more
Further ETA: I will buy a fresh, free-range turkey...I always do

Re: Did you know that farming
Very interesting. Most of my family on my mom's side are farmer's (and despite that article, most of the cousins my age are farmers themselves.) I don't think that they get subsidies, based on the stuff I've overheard, but I could be totally wrong. It is interesting that while all this organic and natural stuff is booming, they don't have an "occupation" anymore. Sad
