Did you know the ceiling fans...

cost so much a year to run? Almost as much as an AC.

I keep getting huge bills and just did an analysis of my energy use. I leave my fans on all day long everyday. I never knew they cost so much to runChat Icon Chat Icon

Oh and I leave the computer on all day and I was told to shut it off during the day.

Really? I use ceiling fans and stand alone fans frequently and our bill actually went down significantly from last August.

It's probably the computer. They use A LOT of electricity.

Ceiling fans don't use much electicity. We use them when we have the AC on too, since they help to keep the cool air from rising, so your AC isn't working as hard to keep the room at the temp you set.

They told me that the fans are a big part of our problem. I was running at least 4 all day and night everyday.

That's surprising. Our contractor told us to use them and this year our electrical bill went down versus last year. We use 4 too.

For us, turning off the computer and unplugging TVs and stuff that don't get used much really helped. Even though they are off, they are still using electricity for some reason. It's so weird.

Thats not true. . Where did you get that information? There are more efficient fans though, do you have old ones?

I got it from Keyspan. They did an analysis of our home energy usage. All but 1 is new. The others are from probably the '80's.

I can't see how a fan uses just as much electric as an AC Chat Icon

Fans come in energy efficient? Never seen that before.

Our AC's use only about $30 worth of energy more. Which to Keyspan is not a big difference?

We don't leave on any appliance when not in use - besides costing money, it's just a waste of electricity.

We leave our fan on all the time in our bedroom and our bills aren't that different then in the winter.

How did they do their analysis? Did they come to your house and use a voltage meter for each device? I'm not sure why they would give you that kind of information without something concrete to back it up with... Chat Icon

Yes, some of them do - but anything that is from the 80's is going to be less efficient than new ones. Even though they don't use anything near what an AC uses you should really invest in some new ones.
I don't understand how keyspan could give you that kind of information, isn't keyspan for gas only?
You can get an energy analysis done on your home - the LIPA website has good information about this.

Do your fans have lights on them? Do you leave the lights on all day too?

Re: Did you know the ceiling fans...

No way. I had a ceiling fan in my last house we it was almost on 24/7 during the summer. Ceiling fans are like having a 60 watt light bulb on minus the light and look for one with the ENERGY STAR rating.

Also is yours spinning in the right direction. Counter clock wise during the summer and clock wise for the winter. Or visa vera I forgot...

Re: Did you know the ceiling fans...

Also there's a website that rates air circulation on fans. Most older fans rate a 2. They rate them 1 to 5 with 5 having the best air circulation and the last one we had rated a 4 and sometimes our living room was freezing and that was during the summer. 100 degrees outside and freezing in our house :)

If you leave the computer on, do you also leave the printer on. I have a laser jet and didn't realize how much power it used until I kept tripping the circuit when I plugged something else in.

I hope the ceiling fans are more energy efficent than our cac since we tried to use the fans during the summer to save $$$

Re: Did you know the ceiling fans...

Although this topic is being overdone - I can say that we leave at least three ceiling fans running all day in the summer and our bill is about $100/month...In July we turned on the AC all day for a few days and our bill jumped up to over $200 for that month - so there is no way the ceiling fans use the same energy as the AC
