Did you or are you changing the locks?
Danielle doesnt think we need to change them, because the original owner passed away, and the owners son lives in PA.
I told her I want to change them, because you dont know who has keys to the house.
Do you change the locks or not?
Thanks, Scott

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
You can hire a locksmith to come in and recode the existing locks so you don't have to actually replace them. I think it's a little less expensive and easier.

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
hmmm thats interesting...never thought of that.
I wonder what it would cost to do the front door, back door and the garage door. I am not sure if there is a lock on the garage door though. Scott

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
We didn't. The sellers moved to New Mexico and they were from the midwest, I don't think they had family in the area.
It didn't occur to me that there might be copies of the keys floating about. Though when we moved in, the keys and locks seemed brand new, like they'd just been changed.

This is what we did. Since our old condo was empty, we gave the key to painters and the rug people. Once the work was done, we changed the locks. If you aren't having any work done on Day #1, I would make changing the locks the first thing on the to-do list. For all you know, they may have lent a key to a neighbor.

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
We will be having contractors in the house for months before we can move in. FIL is general contractor and his main guy, George, is doing a lot of the work.
We are changing the locks right away due to all of the new appliances, fixtures, and equipment that will be stored in the house while they are working on it.
FIL and George won't be giving anyone the key.

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
We didn't......however, I want to and not only because of safety reasons (although we've been in the house for over a year)...I want to replace the front door and doorknob so, we'll get a new lock then.

We didn't change them and I was never really worried about it. However, a couple of months after we moved in we bought new doors.

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
Oh my that was the first thing we did! The couple we brought our house from gave us the wrong key, they never "locked" the door so they had no idea which key to give us. I remember coming to the house before buying it and the realtor saying these people are nuts they never lock their doors! We ring the bell and just let ourselves in.
The first week in the house I had ADT come and install an alarm system, really no need for it but you never know!

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
Definitely change them! Even if they have no family in the area, you never know who has copies - a maid service, a dog walker, a babysitter, handyman, painters....

Re: Did you or are you changing the locks?
This is not something that I even thought to do to be honest-- I guess from being a renter until now... I have a medeco lock that I own which I have brought from apt to apt and have had a handy man install- it's a pain to get it out, so I am going to leave it in my rented apt when we leave next week..
With our new place-- they actually are replacing the locks on the outside building door today-- and the previous owner handed over their copies that they had-- they must have handed them out right before we closed a couple of weeks ago-- so, with those new locks, I don't think we are going to bother to go through the trouble-- since there is no one who can actually get in the building, maybe when the dust settles on everything else.
