I can't get over how awful this is. It's haunting me.

(from the Bellmore Patch)Four children returned to their North Bellmore home after school Tuesday afternoon to find their mother dead on the kitchen floor and their father locked in an upstairs bedroom.

According to Deputy Insp. Kenneth Lack, a 13-year-old girl was the first to arrive home and her father only spoke to her from behind the door. Lack said the father instructed her to pick up her other siblings - ages 10, 9 and 7 - from school. When she and three other siblings returned to the Smith Avenue home, they could not get in the front door.

The children gained entry through another door and found the mother lying on the kitchen floor, according to police. They also saw a note and allegedly notified police.

The children then searched for the father, who was allegedly in an upstairs bedroom, but they could not reach him. Police stated that they removed the father from the home, but he has since passed away.

Police did not mention how the fatal injuries occurred, but stated it initally appears the father killed the mother. They also said that a gun was not found during an immediate investigation.

Neighbor Mike Sudlow told Patch that his 11-year-old daughter plays with the family's second oldest child. Sudlow said he has known the family for more than 10 years.

"I’m in shock," he said. "They seemed to be the nicest couple. If you were looking for your kids, you went straight to their house because all of the kids played there."

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
(Newsday released the identities by asking neighbors but, the police haven't officially realeased them yet)

NEWS12 is reporting that the wife told the husband about 3 months ago that she was leaving him. But it hasn't been confirmed by police.
Regardless of the reason, this is just terrible. No need for these poor children to be without parents.

how heartbreaking. those poor kids....i hope they have a strong family and support system to get them through this.

How absolutely AWFUL!! So selfish of the father to not think of his children first. What a shame.

How traumatic for these children to come upon their mom this way. Plus for the 13 year old to have spoken to her dad through the screen door only a short time before.

I did see in newsday this morning that neighbors heard them arguing earlier in the day & went over but no one answered...

This is very sad. The poor daughter who went home and saw her father alive and then went home and both her parents were dead. Those children will have such a different life now I feel awful for them.

I will NEVER EVER understand why people do these things. Between the stories of parents killing one another or the parents that kill their children, ugh...sickening...I hope these children can get help and eventually move forward from this...

That is just horrible....those poor kids....I just dont understand people if things are that bad just walk away.....

Horrific. All I can say is that the North Bellmore School District is wonderful and it is my prayer that the children will get all the help, love and support that they are going to so desperately need during this horrific time in their lives.

this kills me, those poor kids. their lives were changed forever yesterday. nothing will ever be the same.

Horrible. I was nervous at first that it was going to say he killed the kids too!

I saw this last night. Those poor kids.

That father was a selfish jerk! HOW can anyone do that to their children.
You want to kill yourself, fine, go ahead, but, now those poor kids have to suffer without both parents.

I they have a huge family with tons & tons of support.

I can't even imagine.

this really just breaks my heart. if you have issues, just leave, why do you need to kill someone over it?

This is literally a block away from me. I can't believe it.

POS. If he wanted to murder someone, he should've started with himself.

Thank god he didn't touch the kids like that story in Garden City a few years ago...

So horrible. I've been hearing of this more and more. Makes u really wonder what on earth goes thru their heads do they go crazy? Insane? Something we will never know.
