Diet for Diabetics
My dh was just diagnosed with diabetes. No insulin, just meds, healthier eating and meds needed.
He is getting tired of eating the same things day in and day out.
Any suggestions for meals and snacks?
Thanks

Re: Diet for Diabetics
chicken, fish Non starchy veggies. Watch the fruit intake as they have a lot of sugar. Watch what he drinks since there is a lot of sugar in most drinks. I switched to crystal light when I needed something with flavor. One can only drink so much water. Snacks I find really hard. I will grab a cheese stick and whole grain crackers, small apple, celery and yougurt dip

Yeah, he only drinks water or diet green tea which has only just a little bit of sodium, nothing else.
He has been eating rice cakes, yogurt, pretzels, fruit, breadsticks for snack.
Eggs for breakfast. Multigrain bread with jam, turkey with lunch. Mustard instead of mayo.
I feel bad as I get the same stuff every week for him and I know it is getting boring.

Re: Diet for Diabetics
See if your insurance will cover a meeting with a dietician or nutritionist. Ours will cover for dietary counseling for DH's heart attack.
American Diabetes Association website is also a good source of information.
My mom was type 2 diabetic.

Re: Diet for Diabetics
A diabetes counselor will teach you guys how to count carbs and learn the foods that will have an impact on blood sugar. He should also consider testing before and after meals so he can learn which foods impact him.
ETA: I remember them telling me that my dinner plate should be half veggies with the other half lean protein and starch. Also to eat my protein first, then veggies and then the starch.

Re: Diet for Diabetics
Great advice so far. Also peanut butter.
I had GD twice. I found if I wanted a carb I had to eat a protein or lots of veggies with it. Like I couldn't eat just a slice of pizza. If I ate a slice AND a salad with it, my sugar was ok.

Diet for Diabetics
My dh has been doing the Sonoma diet - it is an offshoot of the mediterean diet - but both track the glycemic index

Re: Diet for Diabetics
The glycemic index charts are awesome. I actually figured out the index myself through trial-and-error before it was widely published. Not all carbs are created equally. Fructose and glucose are absorbed very quickly. Lactose is much slower.
I also started leaning towards a more Atkins diet plan before that was published, too. Proteins fill you up, but don't affect blood sugar much.
