Difference between OTC and prescription prenatals?

My doctor told me she prefers prescription prenatals because she knows "whats in them"... From what I have heard even the different brands of prescription prenatals vary in the amounts of each ingredient. Is there really a big difference between prescription and OTC?

i don't think there's too much difference. my doctor said i should just choose one that didn't make me nauseous.

My doctor put me on citrical because it is high in folic acid and because of family history, that's really important for me....

My dr didnt prescribe me prenatals- I told her I was taking the Target brand and she was totally fine with that- and told me that she took the Target ones during her first pregnancy too!

Same here. I took CVS prenatals TTC and with DD, and the beginning of this pg. I now take Flinstones cause even the OTC ones were making things worse.

The biggest difference is the amount of folic acid. The prescription ones have 1mg and the others have either 0.4mg (400mcg) or 0.8mg (800mcg). Studies have shown that at least 0.8mg dramatically reduces the risk of spina bifida, and "they" recommend taking 1mg. However, some docs are ok with the 0.8mg since studies have shown that dose to be effective. There is also folic acid added to grain products.

My DH had a cousin with spina bifida. This is why my doctor put me on prescription prenatals way before we even considered TTC.

Re: Difference between OTC and prescription prenatals?

For those taking OTC, my dr. recommends taking Expecta. It's an OTC supplement that you take with your OTC prenatal. It provides the additional Omega 3/DHA that most OTC prenatals may not provide.

You can buy it at Target and I've seen it at Motherhood.

I know that we see the same dr & she gave me the prescription for prenatals! She said that she would prefer me on something she could "control" more then something OTC. I trust her judgement & will start my prescription prenatals tomorrow!

I took the CVS brand for both my pregnancies. My doctor does not prescribe prenatals unless some extenuating circumstance dictates he should.

I don't know how much the OTC prenatals are, but even WITH my insurance, my prescription prenatals are $17 Chat Icon .

You could always call your insurance company and ask....

Re: Difference between OTC and prescription prenatals?

It was so much higher with my insurance vs. OTC.

My dr. told me OTC was fine.

Re: Difference between OTC and prescription prenatals?

My prescription prenatals have 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid. I was also on many vitamins before TTC because I am a post-operative gastric bypass patient. I have to take dietary supplements for the rest of my life due to malabsorption issues. My OB prescribed NovaNatals (Nutrispire - generics) and my surgeon concurred that they had enough vitamins besides the folic acid I needed so I could be healthy too along with a baby. Just remember, everyone is different. What is best for one person is not always best for another.
