difficulty of cutting a hole for a lock in a steel door?

Does anyone know how difficult it is (for a professional that is) to cut a hole in a steel door?

Re: difficulty of cutting a hole for a lock in a steel door?

Once when we lived in an apartment DH and I were locked inside of the apartment. We had to get a locksmith to saw his way through the metal door. The key had broken inside of the lock and the door slammed shut from a huge wind gust thereby locking us into the apartment. It took the guy over 3 hours. He broke through 3 different blades and cost us $500.

For a DIY-er, it should take about half an hour:

we had steel doors but most are hollow so its quick if your door is steel through then it will take a while.

If a person who doesn't do this for a living can do it in 30 minutes, I would hope a professional could do it even faster and easier!

Most home steel doors are just steel clad, not solid steel. That would be a very heavy and very expensive door! Cutting through sheet metal is not very difficult. I'm guessing I could do it myself in about 15 minutes. I've cut lock holes in wood doors, and that's very easy. I would just need a little extra time to deal with the sheet metal, but not that much more.
