Dilema !!
First, good news is that we just closed on our home yesterday. Now the problem is that the previous owner did not want their cat so they told us that they were just going to open the door and let her out. When my husband and I heard this, we told them to just leave her here, but we really do not want her. I called Northshore Animal league and they're not accepting animals until Dec. What do we do with this cat?? Help !

Re: Dilema !!
You can bring it to your town shelter and they must accept it. Or call animal control to come catch it.
FYI, as I understand it, NS Animal League can not accept animals as by NYS law all animals must be accepted by your local government shelter.

After you go to closing & get the keys, give them a good slap for me.
There are a few cat-only rescues on Long Island as well, but I would definitely check the Last Hope Rescue.
Congrats on your house

Re: Dilema !!
Wow, I can't believe they would do something like that! I would definitely try bringing it to the town shelter.

Fecking bastards.
How about asking a local vet if they can take the cat? PetCo hosts Kitty Kind click here , maybe they can help?

Re: Dilema !!
That is horrible! After you close and get the keys, if the cat is still around, call the police. It's against the law to abandon a domesticated animal. You can bring the cat to your municipal shelter and they have to take it.

Re: Dilema !!
How can someone just move and leave their poor little cat? That poor little animal who is completely helpless and dependant on its owners to care for it, feed it and love it. And these monster just THROW IT AWAY???

Re: Dilema !!
i would sooooo report those people to the humane society!!!!!! how dare they even suggest just letting the cat go like that!!!!!
i think if you fm regi, she'd have all the information you need on where you can bring the kitty where there is a no kill policy.
good luck!

Re: Dilema !!
I agree with the slapping suggestion. I'm not a big fan of cats to begin with but these people should be shot. Just open the door !
oh and legally, that's not accepting a house as "broom swept" - it is their responsibility to get rid of their stuff.

Re: Dilema !!
Let me ask my DH if he can take the cat. Do you have any info on it, vaccines, age, color, sex? My DH's animal hospital may have room for him.
It is illegal to abandon an animal, I would call the police! (Nothing may happen because they talked about abandoning the animal, and you intervened by saying to leave the cat there in the home...I'm not sure...bottom line, these people are total sh!t)

YOu know this happened to my step brother, when he bought his house in seaford, there was this cat that always cried by the door to come in, the neighbor came over and told them they left their cat behind!!!! So my stepbrother took her in, her name is Jade, they kept her name too. after a yr finally jade gets along with thier cat and dog they allready had but I cant believe someone would just leave a helpless animal behind!!!!

I agree- that is completely and thoroughly disgusting. That poor cat. I'd take it myself if we didn't already have three and a dog.
Years ago I took a cat (I just couldn't afford the additional vet bills at the time. ) to the Freeport Humane Society. They are a no-kill shelter.

Re: Dilema !!
My DH treated a dog that the owners picked up and moved away, and they left their dog tied up in the backyard. For days in the freezing snow with no food or water this dog suffered.
Neighbors finally realized what happened (the people didn't sell the house, they just left, probably in the process of being foreclosed), and called a local rescue group. The dog turned out to be ok.
This happens a lot.
I also had a hairdresser ask me if my DH would put her two cats to sleep...I asked what was their diagnosis...she said, "oh, there's nothing wrong with them, I'm going to be moving into a condo where they don't accept animals". That was the last I saw her (of course I lectured her on how wrong this was, and made her promise to contact me or DH if it got to that point, who knows what happened).
Do these people have souls?
