That is such a fantastic idea! What a bright kid, I'm very impressed with her and with TGI Fridays. I had no idea that they even had this program. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. Boy I'm PMSing!!!

Instead of, "Susy is an autistic child", say, "Susy is a child with autism."

The disease/condition DOESN'T define the person...the person HAS the disease/condition.

Re: Dining out with an Autistic Child....I think this is an amazing idea!!

from Wiki:

People-first language is a linguistic concept related to political correctness which has been proposed by several organizations representing people with disabilities. The basic idea is to replace, e.g., "disabled people" with "people with disabilities", "deaf people" with "people who are deaf", etc., thus emphasizing that they are people first (hence the concept's name) and anything else second. Further, the concept favors the use of "having" rather than "being", as in "she has a learning disability" instead of "she is learning-disabled".

The rationale behind people-first language is that it supposedly recognizes that someone is a person, a human being, or a citizen first, and that the disability is a part, but not all of them. Thus, it asks for one to respect the disabled community as first and foremost a community of people. It is also supposed to confirm the right of the concerned group to define themselves and choose their own name.

This is true and those of us in the field do this when we can, but for the sake of brevity and clarity, it often gets lost in translation. You have to think of the general population and what they will understand and comprehend in order to ensure the safety of the child. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Political correctness is not always the best thing.

I understand where those of you are coming from in regards to the language being used, but I think it's over shadowing the point of the article.

While I'm all for being PC, I also think the point of the article shouldn't be lost.

I work with children with Autism and although Autism affect 1 in 150 families not everyone including the NEw YORK TIMES has caught up with all the PC terms when refering with children with disabilities but I find it sad that everyone is jumping on the negative of this post and not focusing on the foward thinking POSITIVE of this article!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. I teach children with autism, Asperger's and PDD NOS. The magazine doesnt care about the kids, they care about selling magazines - bottom line.

This is a process that will take a very long time just as it has taken the world to change from "black" to "African-American" or from "oriental" to "Asian" and even so, there are thousands who havent made that transition yet. The more awareness, the better the chances of it happening.

However, there are and will always be instances where the fewer amounts of words used, the better for people to process and understand. I remember growing up, there were signs that said "Deaf Child Area." It is simply eye catching and alerts people much faster than "Area with a child who has a hearing impairment." In that case, I would throw PC-ness out the window to protect the child as it simply takes too long to read a street sign with that many words.

(hi-jack over)

All of that aside, and back to the topic at hand... Considering that 1 in 150 children will be diagnosed with autism, there is certainly a need for such programs. It would make dining for the families much easier and is a great start for awareness.

In my experience, not two children with autism are alike. One never knows what will irritate one or soothe the other. There is no cookie-cutter response to an outburst or behavioral difficulty. I venture to say that most waitstaff have some degree of training and protocol to follow in difficult situations. In 11 years of teaching chldren with special needs, a lot of what I use in my "arsenal" is in my gut and my heart. I would suggest to trainers and waitstaff that the best thing they can do is be reassuring to the parent and to try to reduce the amount of "hub-bub" by other patrons by calmly exlpaining the situation. Some will get it. Some will not.

Re: Dining out with an Autistic Child....I think this is an amazing idea!!

What an amazing idea. I also had tears in my eyes. I think it's a fantastic idea. I think that more needs to be done in schools to educate children about autism so that hopefully there won't be a need for nights like this, that parents would be able to go out without getting looks on any night of the week.

As, as said above, I don't think 'people first' language is really known outside of certain fields. As a teacher I try my best to use it, but it's difficult to break old habits.
