Dining Room Light Fixture - Need Advice with Pics
We put up a new light fixture over our dining table this weekend and I am wondering if we should lower it...
Right now it is 40 inches over the table -so there is a space of about 3 feet and 4 inches (I think 3 feet is the amount they use as a general rule when hanging lights over a table?)...
If we lower it, it will probably be lowered another 6 inches because i think that is the size of the extension rod (right now it's in the box and DH put it where i can't reach so i can't take it out to measure it )...
What do you think? Should we lower it? Or will that be too low and possibly get in the way?
If I change the centerpiece to a low bowl arrangement do you think the space between the light and the table will look too large?
WWYD?
DH is going to kill me if we have to lower it

I like it with the light fixture high - to hell with "rules"...
Ours is very low and I can't put a vase of flowers in the center.
So I say stick with your height as is.

For 8' foot ceilings, the fixture should be 30" off the table. I read that online this morning.
For higher ceilings - for every foot, bring it up 3" (i.e. 9' ceilings, 33" off table ...10' ceilings, 36" off table ....)
From this website: http://www.lightingshowplace.com/info/selecting_a_size?P&source=ggl
"The bottom of your chandelier should be 30" (76 cm) above the tabletop if you have 8' (2.4 m) ceilings. If your ceilings are higher than 8', raise the chandelier 3" (7.5 cm) for every extra foot (30 cm) of height. "

ok our ceilings are 10 feet and there is 40 inches space between our table and light....so by those guidelines the light should be brought down 4 inches...right?

I know there are rules of thumb, but I think it looks nice higher. I would leave it. I like that mine is higher, at least I don't have problems with putting anything on the table in the center.
By the way, love how the DR is turning out.

I think that you should leave it higher. You have to take people bumping their heads into consideration.

Aesthetically, I think it needs to be lowered. It looks a bit off to me that high.

I like it higher. I also think it works out better when i have to move the table over for space, people are not constantly bumping their heads, walking through the room.

see that is a good point b/c when we have people over we actually have to move the table away from the wall a little bit otherwise there isn't enough room (i don't know why the builders put the light fixture so close to the wall!!!)
lowering it could cause an issue with people hitting into it....i am short so i forget that for other people it might be in their way....
maybe for that reason we should just leave it? we are having company on xmas eve and we'll have all the leaves open and the table will be moved closer to our couch so there is more room - and i don't want any injuries

I agree. It's a very pretty fixture and I think by lowering it, it would create a more intimate feel to the dining space.
ETA - I don't think you will have many issues with people bumping their heads since it's a long fixture and is in the middle of the table.

Re: Dining Room Light Fixture - Need Advice with Pics
i think maybe i'll tell DH i'd like to lower it and test it out.....i think it would be better a drop lower as long as nobody will hit into it if the table is moved for company.....i feel like this style of light is supposed to hang lower....i guess the only way to know is to lower it and test it out! otherwise it will drive me crazy if we don't try it...
thanks for everyones opinions

I agree with OP...I have no idea what the rules are, but to the eye, it just looks a little too high.
