dining room or bigger kitchen

would you rather have a dining room with a tiny kitchen or open the kitchen up and make it an eat in kitchen with more counter space and more space in general?

Re: dining room or bigger kitchen

The previous owners of my house took out the dining room and made a huge kitchen. I love it. I would much rather a big kitchten than a dining room. I have a table in my kitchen that opens up to a square that can fit 10 people..and their is still room to add another table if we need it..

We are going through the same decision right now! We decided on the smaller kitchen and the large dining room. Cost was a factor. But we're also not big on cooking and we plan on having 1 or 2 children and in a small kitchen we can still have an eating area to fit 4 people. DH has a large family and having a large dining room to fit e/o we want to entertain was important. If we went with the smaller dining room we would have been able to fit just a table and it would have been tight fitting so many people around the table. I know you really only entertain a few times a year but we can get e/t we want into the smaller kitchen.

We also thought about resale and how most people like a karge kitchen but we figured that we are going to be in this house for a long enough time that I want to do what we are going to be happy with.

It depends how small the kitchen would be without giving up the dining room. If it was really small, I think I would give up the dining room and combine them. My kitchen is pretty small but we will look to bump the house out to expand it before giving up the dining room.

I"d much rather have a dining room with a small kitchen. Either way then you'd have a big spot to eat and have room for when company comes. In my next house a dining room will be a must!

Re: dining room or bigger kitchen

I have a small kitchen with a small spot counter like with two chairs. Our dining room is large and I have a big square table in there. I would love a larger ktichen but I love having a separate dining room.

I would opt for the bigger kitchen. Where does everyone hang out when you have a party?? The kitchen!! No matter what! :)

We just moved (ok well 4 months ago now) from a house with a tiny kitchen and nice dining room.

Our new house has NO dining room, but a large, eat-in kitchen.

I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer the larger kitchen! Our dining room table fits in it, and that's all we need! Chat Icon

I prefer the larger open space. Instead of a formal dining room we have a great room the is right next to the kitchen. We eat in the dining area side of the great room all the time. Its not to formal to use everyday & when we have holidays I can put the leaves in the table & seat 16 comfortably.
It allows our guests to be mingling around the kitchen without really being in it.

that's my train of thought too. everyone always winds up in the kitchen. i guess its going to have to depend on cost. thanks all for your words of wisdom!!

Hmmm...that's tough. I think it depends on how much cooking you do vs. how much entertaining you do. I think I'd pick the DR but that's because I don't have one and would like one.

its tough but I love formal dining rooms. Its a must so I would prefer a small kitchen with a dining room than a large kitchen without any dining room

bigger kitchen.

would it be large eough to accomodate a large table for holiday and GTG entertaining? do you have a LR and a den? if so and since the formal LR is rarely used, you could convert the LR into a DR (depending on the location of the room).

Bigger kitchen. Unless my dining room and living room were connected, so when entertaining the rooms flowed together.

Bigger kitchen, most def. People always end up in the kitchen, you could have the biggest house and everyone huddles in the kitchen.

Re: dining room or bigger kitchen

I would prefer opening the kitchen up, as long as the EIK was large enough for a large table for family dinners.

there is a living room that flows into the dining room and a den downstairs..its a split level house. the kitchen with the wall knocked down would be a big open kitchen with an eat in area. right now its the formal dining room, then the kitchen with the appliances on one side and cabinets/countertop on the wall of the dining room.
