Dip in NYC
we want to go on saturday around 5. we called and got an answering service and left a message. that was friday and no call back since. should we just go and see what's what?

As long as your plans are flexible on where you eat, I would go.
In my experience, most of the NYC restaurants call back to confirm (they also call back to remind you).

we are going to MSG for 8 so we want to eat around 5. so we don't have a reservation.....do we need one?

I would call back later in the day to make a reservation (after 4.30 or so) they open for dinner. They only accept reservations for parties of 4 or more. Without one you may have a bit of a wait.
