Discipline for 1 year old

Please help! I feel like a complete idiot. He laghs at me when I say no, I try to distract him from whatever he is doing but he goes right back to it. EVERY day he throws the sippy off the tray and laughs. I say no, take it away for the rest of the meal, try to get him to put it in my hand, but it doesn't matter. He also goes after power cords (laptops, lamps, etc..) I've gotten them tucked away pretty good, but he can find them. I'm at my wits end and he just turned one!!! I'm so screwed for the toddler years Chat Icon

Re: Discipline for 1 year old

As far as the sippy tossing thing, I try to completely ignore. If she tosses it, I do not even pick it up and that is the end of the sippy cup for that meal.
As hard as it is, with all the other stuff, I just say NO(stern) and redirect, over and over and over againChat Icon

i was just going to post the exact same question!! I do sympathize though i do not have a sollution... we have issues with ds climbing on the tv so starting yesterday I started that if he does it more then twice then the tv goes off... i have tried takingt the sippy away when he tosses it but he hasnt figured that out either... i think he is just too young... and yes whenever i say no he actually looks at me and smiles... i think it is more of a game

Re: Discipline for 1 year old

At that age they don't really understand much. When my DD was that age she was into everything as well. We had to do a lot of distracting to keep her from doing things. Our ped told us that if she was about to do something dangerous or harmful to give her a stern no to show her we meant business.

Re: Discipline for 1 year old

I know some people are going to flame me for this, but I started time outs for dangerous things (pulling cords, hitting the tv and hitting others). I tell him no one time, if he doesn't do it, I go over to him and tell him no again and if he doesn't move away he gets a 1 minute time out. He sits next to me out the couch or a chair or something and I ignore him for one minute (holding him down from getting up). I am going to look for a time out chair or mat to use too, that way its not always me holding him! As for the sippy cup, that I just ignore. He gets 2 dropsies and then I take it away and if he wants water I have to hold it (which he hates!)

hey nothing wrong with starting timeout.... ds was driving me crazy before and kept cliimbing on the tv so i turned it off... he had a tantrum and i put him in the crib for a nap... i know it is wrong to send a baby to his room, but he actually napped for almost 2 hours...

Re: Discipline for 1 year old

At one I was mostly redirecting DD's bad behavior and rewarding good. I tried to save no for more dangerous things. I also started time out for serious stuff if repeated no's did not work.

Yeah I was thinking of starting some kind of "time out". I mean he is starting to understand things and I want him to realize that there are consequences to the word "no" rather then it just being used so I can hear myself speak Chat Icon I mean he is laughing at me when I say it, he has no clue that it means anything. I need to find some kind of time out chair, something like the highchair but I don't want to use that and have him associaite that with time outs.
