Disciplining a 5 months - I need advice!!!
OKay - I know it sounds a bit harsh - but i really need advise and want to know if there is anything i can do to make my 5 month old stop this bad habit someone has apparently taught her
Since yesterday - she bunches up her lips and squirts out spit while making a noise with her mouth - she has been doing this every waking moment (almost!) that's if she isn't eating or sleeping. Actually she tried to do this when i gave her cereal last night and cereal went everywhere. I thought she would forget after last night and this morning sure enough there she goes again!! She is constantly making this noise and squirting her saliva all over our face. First we were laughing - then got serious and said "no" everytime she did that. Of course - she doesn't understand - but im wondering if there is really anything we can do or should we just ignore it??
ALSO - and this makes me so mad but family members apparantly think its cute to teach my DD how to pull hair and make funny noises and do silly things - when i catch them in action - i totally tell them to stop and never do that again to her. I think people think its funny to show a kid what to do - but its not funny for us parents that have to teach them that that is absolutely wrong!! Just a vent of mine - I hope im not the only one going through this. Please help

Re: Disciplining a 5 months - I need advice!!!
I have two children (5 years and 17 months), and one thing I've learned is that when you ignore the behaviors you don't like, they disappear. When the kids get attention (positive or negative) they keep on doing whatever it is I don't like. Why don't you try encouraging your family to teach your DD some things you want her to learn, i.e. "how big is the baby?" and "where is your nose?" Even though she's too young to do it now, you'd be surprised how fast she'll learn! I know what you're going through, but as my mom tells me every time I'm frustrated with my kids, "This too shall pass......." and it always does! Good Luck!

I would ignore it- she just realized she can make that sound and is playing with it. Soon she will move on to a cuter sound.

This is actually one of the beginning stages of learning how to talk. It is normal

I have to agree with sunny. Emily realized at some point (probably around 4-5 months) that she could "blow raspberries" and was spitting and blowing spit bubbles constantly. In about 2 weeks she discovered she could do something else, and she stopped doing that and moved on to the new thing.
It might not even be your family teaching her to do it. It might just be a developmental thing --- I've seen a lot of babies do this --- it might just be that developmentally she figured it out and she'll be doing it until her next "milestone."

Yep -- that's what I'm thinking to -- she's experimenting with the noises she can make. It's actually a good thing.
Babies don't know what is "rude" and not rude --- just wait until she starts flinging food around the kitchen and smashing food into her hair!

Re: Disciplining a 5 months - I need advice!!!
Thanks so much ladies. I guess im alittle upset because i sometimes catch family members teaching her things she shouldn't do - "like pull hair and maing these noises" - so i will just ignore it. Im sure it will pass eventually, im just getting tired of wiping spit off my face -
Thanks so much - MomofmandB - I think it really is a great idea to promote family members to start teaching her "where her nose is"etc.......Good point. Thank you ladies.

I was just going to post that what she's doing is normal practice for speech.

Re: Disciplining a 5 months - I need advice!!!
ITs called blowing raspberries and its part of their development, if they never made this sound I might be concerned because its considered a mini milestone.

Is it a rasberry? The doctor asked me if Gianna does this, I said especially when she has food in her mouth and he laughed I guess you can consider it a milestone
