Discord App
Hi. Does anyone have any info on the app called "Discord"? My daughter is 12 YO. She has played Minecraft for a few years. She used to play either alone or with friends via FaceTime. She's now started to play with strangers and they communicate via this Discord app. I had never even heard about it until she was already using it. Is it mostly kids playing video games? Is it safe?
We've drilled it into her head that she should never give her real name and date of birth on any websites and she shouldn't connect online with people she doesn't know in real life. She's a smart kid and I'm hoping she won't do anything stupid. But, kids are kids and they can do stupid things! I was just wondering if anyone could give me some info on the app.
Thanks!

Re: Discord App
I've been using it extensively for a year now with my Boy Scout Troop. We use it to discuss meeting plans, post information, etc. Each channel on the server is equivalent to the forums on here. You can have topic categories and sections just like in here.
It's not inherently good or bad. It's a tool, so if you join the wrong server, there could be bad people on there.
Both of my DC are on various servers, for various topics.

Not necessarily. If there is an invite link that doesn't expire, anyone that uses that invite link could get into that server.
It all depends on how the particular server's "owner" has it set up.

Discord App
My ds uses is and has learned a lot about dynamics between schoolmates & how they change behind the keyboard. It's what the pre-teens in his circle use for texting one another. I have an account to help him out if he doesn't understand something. They have forums like what Goldenrod described. They use it while playing their games too so they can communicate, some use voice, or text.

Re: Discord App
Unlike in here, which is just text, Discord does have the ability to have voice chats and video chats. Like any social media site, younger kids will need appropriate supervision and guidelines.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It doesn't sound like it's horrible, but, as with any social media, there's potential for kids to get in trouble. We'll definitely keep an eye on her. Thanks again!
