Discounts on manhattan hotels?
We're looking to send my ILs in to a broadway play and a night in the city for their 30th anniversary. We can't send them away away b/c DH's grandpa is 93 and isn't doing well- so I know they won't go far. Thought this would be a nice thing to do for them just to get them away for a little while and take some responsibility away from them for a couple of days. Anyone know of any good hotels and also any discounts?

Being in the hotel industry, I would say do your homework before booking anything. Check Hotwire, Priceline & Orbitz. Then check the hotel's website listed rates. Call the hotel MORE than once to see what their rate is also. Don't take the first rate they throw out. Try to talk them down.
My trick is you can say "do you offer a AAA discount?" If they say yes and give you the rate - take it! You didn't SAY you HAD AAA, you just asked if they give a discount for it - get it? 9 times out of 10 they don't check your card when you get there, but don't take my word for it!
Also, another way to get a discounted rate is to book an "internet special" rate. The terms usually say it has to be paid at the time of booking and cannot be cancelled - but if your plans are 100% then it's worth the discount.

Thanks! I might have just found one worth looking into. I've never heard of it before though...

Re: Discounts on manhattan hotels?
I usually stay at the Marriott Marquee Time square and get the Escape Package. I am actually going in next Monday to stay. It was $399 for the night and includes, Dinner for two at the view (Marriott rotating restaurant), Champagne and chocolates in your room, and breakfast for two in the morning. It is a buffet breakfast, but it is really good. It is a great deal, and the hotel is really nice.
