Dishwasher in the Island? UPDATED with Image

So the kitchen reno is in the beginning stages. We had a second cabinet company come and take measurements. This guy had some interesting ideas and one was to put the dishwasher in the Island to maximize the main cabinets. My concern is I have only seen the dishwasher NEXT to the sink. Granted, the island will be directly across from the sink so I'd have to go take a step back to place them in the washer.

Hes creating a few models of the kitchen for me and we will go over it then But I am curious if anyone has ever seen that before - or if you have that and it works well for you.

I'm googling and only find dishwashers in the island when the sink is there too.

TIA

***UPDATE***

I just got starter layout from kitchen place and now I'm considering doing this.

The dishwasher would be facing the sink so the door opens and dished are never over the floor - they go over the door as you place them in

Re: Dishwasher in the Island?

Dishwashers are usually right next to the sink because it's easier to run the supply and drain lines when the sink already has that a foot away.

You have to move the dishes from the dishwasher to the cabinets anyway, so unless you hand-wash every dish before putting it in the dishwasher, I don't see a problem having it in the island without a sink.

This is what he was saying yesterday. Thing is, I rinse EVERYTHING. I don't like the idea of rotting food sitting in the washer for a couple days before I run it. It's just DH and I. So it doesn't fill up right away. I'm thinking of the dripping plates getting them to the washer.

Which is why I am hoping to find someone who has this and can tell me whether its a PITA or not.

With the lines, we know we'd have to put in a new line. We have unfinished basement and a plumber coming to move some stuff anyway (Fridge is moving & adding pot filler because walking 4 steps to the sink sees to be an issue for me lol)

My friend has that. It looks nice but when they rinse and load, water drops always end up on the floor. That would drive me insane (personal pet peeve: wearing socks and stepping on water)

You're almost the exact opposite of us... Chat Icon With 4 of us, we run the dishwasher every day, and we never rinse off any dishes, so for us, it wouldn't be an issue at all.

DW didn't want a pot filler because she figured, if you fill a pot too much on the stove, how are you going to carry it to the sink to drain pasta? If she fills it up in the sink and carries it to the stove, she'll know immediately if it's too heavy or not. (and the water isn't boiling at that point).

Re: Dishwasher in the Island?

Our current setup is a large island with a sink (on the island) and dishwasher right next to it. This is the way we bought the house, and the setup works well. That said, when we eventually do redo the kitchen down the line and I choose what we get, we won’t do this layout.

Maybe I am an oddball. My dishwasher is right next to my sink and I still get water dripping onto the floor.

If the sink will be on the wall and the dishwasher in the island behind it, I would imagine with the DW door open there would be little to no additional space and the water would drip right onto the DW door.

I would keep the dishwasher next to the sink. You are really only "losing" a cabinet, but you will still have that space, just in the island. There are actual studies done on how to best set up a kitchen. You shouldn't have to walk dirty/wet dishes from your sink to your dishwasher. You'll find it to be annoying, IMO.

My sink and dishwasher are both in my island (next to each other). I know for sure the dirty drippings or even just water onto the floor during the transfer would annoy me.

Any chance you can put the sink in your island as well? Is that an option for you?

My island won't really be big enough. It's a small kitchen. I think I'm going to stick with my current layout w it next to the sink. The more I think about it, the more I feel like the dripping water will be a problem. Especially with a wood floor.

Thanks everyone for your opinions

Dishwasher in the Island? UPDATED with Image

I think it would be akward and annoying turning around every time you load the dishwasher. Although it might be easier to empty if you are putting your dishes and cups in piece to the left.

When we designed our kitchen we had a few drawings and figured out where we would be putting most thing.
Another suggestion is to add the sink in the corner and the dishwasher to the left of the sink. I know everything says to have your sink under the window but it made the most sense for us not to and it looks great.

I would not do that and could see someone throwing their back out with this layout.

I personally don't see any benefit to doing this. I would still keep the d/w with the sink.

I think you're going to have a hard time loading the dishwasher and doing dishes. The dishwasher can't be open with you standing at the sink

God. I didn’t even think of this !! Thank you

It would totally be me.

Thanks everyone. Gonna have them re draw this with DW back next to sink. It really is the best way.
