Dishwasher opinions needed. Which would you rather?

Ok, our kitchen is not laid out the best right now and the cabinets are super old, but solid oak, so we're going to keep them for now. Here's the thing, they're not single cabinets, it's all one piece that's made to look like different cabinets by adding doors. Does that make sense? Anyway, here's the issue...we have no dishwasher and need to install one. We have two options with our current configuration: we can take out one small piece of cabinet and add an 18 inch dishwasher OR we can do an "under the sink" full sized dishwasher. The cons of each are: the 18 inch dishwasher is super small and the under the sink dishwasher looks weird being built in under the sink. I don't know which one to do. We're not planning on getting new cabinets for a long time so these are our only two options. I don't know which to do! Give me opinions, please!

I think that having a dishwasher under the sink is very weird configuration.
usually you stand over the sink and load the dishes into the dishwasher either on the left or right side

I understand an 18 inch dishwasher is small but it may be less awkward when your loading and unloading

Hey - don't knock those cabinets! it's hard to get real wood these days, unless you have alot of money to spare. reface them. look at hgtv.
in regards to the dishwasher, i agree wiht previous poster... 18" is better than undersink. you may use it a little more often, but unloading and loading will be much easier!

I agree that under the sink would be difficult, usually your dirty dishes are in the sink - so you would have to move to the side and then reach over the open dishwasher to get the dishes - it seems like it would be uncomfortable. I think the smaller dishwasher would be more comfortable and less annoying.

ITA with the previous poster. In addition to looking a little strange, it's really going to be a pain to load the under the sink model. Unfortunately, I think that smaller might be better in your case...

Re: Dishwasher opinions needed. Which would you rather?

Well, it depends how much smaller is the capacity in the small one...if you entertain a lot & will only be able to load 6 plates at a time...that will get annoying fast.

However, in our house its the 2 of us & the baby & we're lucky to run a load every day....so the smaller one may be fine.

I agree under the sink may be awkward, especially w/ loading it.

Thanks, everyone! I didn't even consider the fact that loading and unloading will be weird with the undersink one. I think we'll just go for the 18 inchChat Icon

I totally agree with the 18" one...you'd need to be a contortionist to load the under the sink one.Chat Icon

I agree! 18" dishwasher would be a better choice IMO!
