Disney bans Smoking in Movies!
Disney-branded films to ban depictions of smoking

Walt Disney Co. on Wednesday became the first major Hollywood studio to ban depictions of smoking, saying there would be no smoking in its family-oriented, Disney-branded films and it would "discourage" it in films distributed by its Touchstone and Miramax labels.
Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger also said in a letter to U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, whose committee last month held hearings on the effects of movie images on children, that the studio would place anti-smoking public service announcements on DVDs of any future films that feature cigarette smoking.
He said the company would encourage theater owners to show screen anti-smoking public service announcements, or PSAs, before such films.
Iger cautioned, however, that "cigarette smoking is a unique problem and this PSA effort is not a precedent for any other issue."
Markey described Disney's commitment as "groundbreaking" and urged other studios to follow suit.
Dr. Cheryl Healton, president and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation, commended Disney's move but said the studio left "some ambiguity about what would happen in relation to Touchstone and Miramax."
Research cited by American Legacy, a nonprofit created out of landmark litigation between the tobacco industry and states attorneys general, shows that 90 percent of all films depict smoking and children with the highest exposure to smoking in movies were nearly three times more likely to start smoking.
Tobacco is featured in three-quarters of G, PG and PG-13 rated movies and 90 percent of R-rated movies, the studies showed.
The independent Weinstein Co. already is using PSAs produced by American Legacy ahead of its films that depict smoking, Healton said.

i remember junior high when half the grade was smoking and i bet its getting worse

Then I'm a geek, too! 
i started smoking young and it was SOOO hard to quit. Its ridiculous to think that right before my 26th birthday, i had already been smoking for 10 years.
Maybe it sounds hypocritical, but if there's ANYTHING they can do to Not promote smoking, then i'm all for it!!

Yup!! In 2 weeks, it's my one Year anniversary of being smoke-free  haven't had one since!

This is the best thing for our youth that has happened in a long time! Hopefully, it will have a positive impact-- at least it won't encourage it anymore!

Last weekend my nephew was watching my old VCR tapes of Disney movies ... he was watching Peter Pan. HE turned to me and said "When can I start smoking?" because one of the characters in the movie was smoking!
I noticed that in recent years they do not really do that anymore, thankfully!

good in theory - but it sure doesn't sound like a real ban - more like a publicity stunt
ok, to eliminate it from family films is great - although i doubt there are many family films that had smoking in them anyway
and then to "discourage" touchstone and miramax.. well.. that's not exactly a ban. airing a no-smoking campaign ad is a great idea, but i wouldn't classify that as a ban

Which is worse? A kid watching a scene where someone happens to be smoking a cigarette or a kid watching a scene where people's limbs get sliced and diced like chop suey?
While I think it's a good proposition on Disney's part, I highly doubt that most kids begin smoking because they saw someone in a movie do it.

yea me too. this is a good thing. But I will never EVER forget how traumatic it was for me when I was a child and saw Bambi for the 1st time. IMO, Disney movies are pretty violent for kids. someone always gets killed

Good.
I have stopped smoking for 1year & 1/2.
It is Hard. I started smoking when I was 14. By the time I quit I have been smoking for amost 14 years. WOW!!!!
It is Hard. Thank God I have my Nictine GUM. I still chew that daily.
It is a VERY Hard Habit to quit & Really Not Good for you. But I do not want to sound like a reformed smoker so I will SHut Up
