Disney to stop advertisements for fattening foods on TV

While I applaud Disney for stepping up to the plate and removing advertisements for fattening food from their programming I have two issues with them.

1. They still license characters to appear on boxes of "fruit snacks." These things are just junk food disguised by the word fruit. I don't think there is any real fruit in most of those snacks. And let's get real - I can turn off the TV, and can use my DVR to skip through the commercials so that my kids don't see the ads. But when I am in the grocery store and my kids are begging me for those fruit snacks - which I try not to purchase - that is SO much harder. Are they going to get rid of those? I wish they would. They are always placed right at my kids' eye level in the grocery store.

2. What is up with the pillow pet/e-z napper/blanket with a toy face/ or slipper item? Are they going to replace advertising with more of that?? I don't know if it bothers anyone else as much as it bothers me, but those songs - my kids sing them and then beg for those toys that are not really toys. AAAH.

I hear ya.

Number 1: I tend NOT to travel down the aisle in my super market. A long time ago, I as told that the healthier food is generally in the outlining areas. Fresh Veggies, Meats, Dairy, Eggs, Breads, Juice etc. The inner rows carry more things like canned veggies, instant potatoes, high sodium stuff and junk in general.

So when we shop we stay to the outside and duck in only from outside without the cart and never with AJ. We do buy junk. Pasta, instant potatoes, some canned veggies, spices, canned fruit (tho not in cans technically).

Since we dont carry those so-called fruit snacks in the house, we just move on along. She's seen them. She's put a box in the cart and we barter out of them for apples, a frozen yogurt taste test (they have mini cups they give kids for free, like two spoons worth) but the so-called fruit snack never makes it home. She wants ice cream, she gets ice cream at home, she KNOWS what ice cream is. She asks for it and the answer is no. God willing, we can stay this way.

Disney, Looney Tune, etc.. Fruit snacks are MAJOR no-no in our house as are most cereals.

The pillow pet thing.. LOL I so feel ya. That song! Thankfully we nearly ALWAYS watch DVR these days. So she still hasn't 'gotten' into them. I actually wouldn't mind one since right now she prefers her to pillows 'white' meaning no covers which drives me CRAZY! lol

I normally don't get them but unfortunately for me, in both of our local grocers they are in the same aisle with cereal and peanut butter/jelly. There is almost no way to avoid them successfully. ETA: I have bought them maybe 4 or 5 times but I wish I never did.

I agree. Things are bad now and its impossible to change everything all at once. But Disney is at least getting the ball moving.

Re: Disney to stop advertisements for fattening foods on TV

My kids see the fruit snacks sometimes in Target and mention the characters and I just say something to the effect of "yeah, look at that," and that's the end of it. They don't ask for them, they have never had one.
My MIL sometimes sends them (for reasons I dont understand) and I put them right in the garbage.

I applaud Disney for taking this step, but we can't expect them to do everything. We as parents have to do our part too in helping our kids make healthy decisions about eating.

.

My DH bought some for DD thinking the were ok because they said 100% juice- and after I chastised him that they are bad for her and her teeth, I ate them all myself!
Those things are YUMMY! (just not for her)
